Located along the Iya River in Miyoshi City, Tokushima Prefecture, Iya Onsen is a hot spring destination nestled at the very bottom of a deep gorge. A representative establishment, Hotel Iya Onsen, is a member of the Association for Preserving Secret Hot Springs of Japan. It is famous for its unique access method: a cable car that carries guests down to the valley floor. From the open-air baths situated close to the sky, visitors can witness the overwhelming grandeur of the surrounding nature and the rushing stream. The spring water is an alkaline simple sulfur spring, characterized by its gentle, skin-friendly texture.
The region is steeped in the legends of the Heike clan, specifically the story of their retreat to this area. History suggests that the Heike clan once sought refuge here and utilized these waters. The modern history of the hot spring began with drilling in 1965, leading to the completion of the current hotel in 1972. Records even suggest that until the late Edo period, locals used the hot springs in nearby areas known as 'Furo no Tani' to treat various skin conditions. In 1984, the cable car system was installed to improve access, eventually shaping the unique and iconic landscape that visitors enjoy today.
The most striking feature is the journey itself: the 5-minute cable car ride down to the valley floor. As you descend, the windows offer a changing view of the rugged terrain and lush vegetation of the Iya Valley. The open-air baths, positioned right next to the mountain stream, provide a sense of unity with the surrounding rock formations and the flowing water. This seamless fusion of natural sculptural beauty and the warmth of the hot spring creates a landscape found nowhere else.

Beyond just bathing, this is a journey of movement. The cable car ride offers a thrilling yet enjoyable way to navigate the steep elevation changes. The surrounding area also features cultural landmarks like the 'Kazurabashi' (vine bridges), allowing you to touch the traditional landscapes of Japan through walking tours. Additionally, the nearby Oboke Gorge is a famous scenic spot perfect for nature walks and enjoying the dramatic geological formations that define this traditional Japanese landscape.
