The Ito Coast is a scenic coastal area located in Otsu-machi, Kitaibaraki City, Ibaraki Prefecture. The landscape is defined by dramatic 50-meter high cliffs shaped by the powerful waves of the Pacific Ocean, creating a unique topography of five interconnected bays: Ko-Itsura, Dai-Itsura, Tsubaki-iso, Naka-iso, and Hashi-iso. This region is often referred to as the 'Matsushima of Kanto,' offering visitors a chance to witness the sublime beauty of natural rock formations.
This area is deeply connected to Okakura Tenshin, a pivotal figure in the development of modern Japanese art. Tenshin chose this location as a base for his activities aimed at modernizing Japanese painting. The area also features the Rokkakudo, a structure believed to have been designed by Tenshin. Although the original structure was lost to the tsunami during the Great East Japan Earthquake, it has been faithfully reconstructed to honor its original design and remains a cherished historical symbol of the region.
The most striking feature of the Ito Coast is the combination of sea cliffs and unique rock formations shaped by erosion. Above the cliffs, lush black pine trees grow, creating a beautiful contrast between the deep blue sea and the green land. Visitors can enjoy the diverse expressions of the five different bays by walking along the coastline, providing an up-close look at the geological wonders created by nature.
As the Ito Coast is an open natural scenic area, there are no official closing times. You can enjoy the breathtaking scenery 24 hours a day. The appearance of the sea changes beautifully with the seasons and weather conditions. However, because the coastline consists of steep cliffs, please exercise caution regarding weather changes and high waves during your visit.
Walking along the coastal paths offers a sense of freedom as you gaze at the vast Pacific Ocean. The area has been selected for both the '100 Soundscapes of Japan' and the '100 Best White Sand and Green Pine Beaches of Japan,' making it an ideal spot for a relaxing stroll while listening to the rhythmic sound of the waves and feeling the sea breeze. Additionally, the presence of nearby art museums and historical buildings allows visitors to experience the area's rich cultural heritage.
The vicinity of the Ito Coast is home to several cultural landmarks. You can visit museums to view works related to Okakura Tenshin or explore buildings designed with historical significance. For those looking to extend their stay, there are several hot spring (onsen) facilities and hotels along the coast, allowing you to soak in the local culture and stunning views.
Since the Ito Coast is a natural outdoor environment, we recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes and bringing clothing that can handle sudden weather changes. The coastal areas can become quite windy, so bringing a windbreaker is highly recommended.
