The Iwamura Castle Ruins are located on Mt. Shiroyama (713m) in Ena City, Gifu Prefecture. This site is historically significant, recognized as one of the "Three Great Mountain Castles of Japan" alongside Bitchu Matsuyama Castle and Takatoru Castle. The site showcases the characteristic features of a mountain fortress, including stone walls that utilize the steep natural terrain, ancient castle paths, and historical structures within the castle ruins park that allow visitors to feel the essence of the past.
This area once served as a vital stronghold for the Iwamura Clan. As a mountain castle built at a high altitude, its defensive structure was masterfully designed to exploit the natural topography. The surrounding castle town preserves the atmosphere of the Edo period, with traditional buildings and museums documenting the clan's history, creating a seamless historical landscape where the castle ruins and the town coexist.
Within the castle ruins park, you can find significant historical structures such as the Taiko Yagura (Drum Tower), the Shimoda Utako School, and the Chishinkan. The Iwamura Castle Town, spreading at the foot of the ruins, is an area rich in Edo-period charm. It features traditional architecture such as the Katsukawa and Kano houses, as well as museums housed in former Meiji-era merchant buildings. You can also visit Iwamura Brewing, a brewery with over 230 years of history. Visiting these local facilities provides a multi-dimensional understanding of Iwamura's heritage.
