Iwakuni Castle is a mountain castle located in Yokoyama, Iwakuni City, Yamaguchi Prefecture. Situated on Mt. Shiroyama at an altitude of approximately 200 meters, the Nishiki River flows below the castle, serving as a natural moat. The current castle keep was reconstructed in 1962 and features a three-story, four-floor structure. The greatest attraction is the expansive panoramic view from the observation deck, which allows visitors to see Iwakuni City, the iconic Kintai Bridge, Iwakuni Air Base, and the beautiful islands of the Seto Inland Sea, including Miyajima.
The history of this castle began in 1608 when it was built by K家 Nobutaka, the first lord of the Iwakuni Clan. Originally, it featured a three-story, four-floor way of building in the Momoyama-style Nanban style. However, due to the 'One Castle per Province' edict by the Tokugawa Shogunate just seven years after its construction, the castle was once dismantled. Today, the site preserves its historical essence through the surviving stone walls and the reconstructed keep completed in 1962, allowing visitors to experience the architectural legacy of the past.
The interior of the castle keep houses various exhibits that convey the local culture and history. Visitors can view a detailed scale model of the Kintai Bridge, as well as historical military gear, armor, and photographs. The observation deck is a crucial spot for enjoying the surrounding topography and maritime scenery. Additionally, the stone walls of the former castle site have been restored using traditional masonry techniques, showcasing the aesthetic beauty of historical Japanese engineering.
Iwakuni Castle offers different scenery depending on the season and time of day. The views of the Seto Inland Sea and Miyajima are particularly clear during seasons with high visibility or during specific times of the day. Please note that the last entry to the castle keep is at 16:30, so it is recommended to arrive with plenty of time to enjoy the site.
To reach the castle, you can either use the Iwakuni Castle Ropeway or take the hiking trail from near Koyo Valley Park (approximately 2 km). The ropeway provides a smooth and easy way to access the summit. For those looking for a unique souvenir, you can purchase the 'Japan's 100 Famous Castles' stamp, original 'Goshuin' (castle seals), or limited-edition designs such as clear files and acrylic stands. These are very popular among travelers as keepsakes of their journey.
At the foot of the castle, you will find the Nishiki River and the famous Kintai Bridge, which are integral parts of the historical landscape. The area around the castle, including Kikyo Park, is well-maintained for strolls, allowing you to enjoy the historical atmosphere. The path to the summit is surrounded by nature, providing a complete sense of the castle's mountain setting.
Since cars are not allowed to enter the castle grounds, you must use the ropeway or walk. If you choose the hiking trail, please wear comfortable walking shoes and prepare for a physical trek. Note that there is no elevator in the castle keep, so you will need to climb stairs. If you wish to purchase souvenirs like the Goshuin or stamps, please bring small change or cash.
