Located in the southern foothills of the famous Mt. Chigamine in Taka Town, Hyogo Prefecture, the Isarigami Rice Terraces are a precious scenic site selected as one of the '100 Best Rice Terraces of Japan.' The landscape consists of 334 terraced fields spread across an altitude of 280m to 430m. The most striking feature is the advanced stone masonry used for the embankments. You can observe unique structural techniques such as 'Terazumi' (a reverse-sloped structure), 'Ninjyu' (stepping stones for grass cutting), and 'Tobishige' (specialized stone stacking adapted to the terrain). It is a place where nature and human ingenuity harmonize to create a quintessential Japanese landscape.
The Isarigami Rice Terraces are believed to have been developed during the Kamakura period. The name 'Isarigami' is said to be a derivation of 'Iwasuwari Kamiyama,' another name for Mt. Chigamine. For centuries, agriculture has been practiced here by utilizing the natural topography. While there were modern plans for land development in recent years, a strong movement arose to preserve this traditional landscape. In 1996, the 'Isarigami Tanada Preservation Society' was established, and local residents continue to maintain these traditional views through dedicated conservation efforts.
The highlight is the intricate stone-walled embankments. Rather than simple earthen banks, the skillfully stacked stones provide a unique texture and a sense of strength to the landscape. The view is particularly stunning from above; aerial photography and drone footage reveal the rhythmic, organic patterns of the terraces. The changing colors of the sky reflected in the water and the seasonal transformation of the rice plants offer a unique charm that can only be experienced in person.
The appearance of the terraces changes significantly with the seasons. You can witness different beauties depending on when you visit, from the lush green of the growing season to the brilliant golden hues of the ripening rice. Visiting during the golden harvest season is highly recommended for the most spectacular views. During the day, the sunlight clearly highlights the three-dimensional structure of the stone walls. Depending on the season, you may even spot scarecrows in the fields, adding a touch of local life to the scenery.
Beyond sightseeing, visitors can engage in agricultural-themed experiences. The area features 'Kleingarten Isarigami,' a facility where you can stay in a cottage equipped with a private garden plot, electricity, and water. This allows visitors to enjoy gardening or growing seasonal vegetables in a deep connection with the local land. Additionally, the famous 'Isarigami Tanada Rice' is produced here and can be purchased at local roadside stations, making it a perfect souvenir.
There are several spots nearby to explore local culture and nature. You can visit the historic Gurei Shrine or find local specialties like Ishigaki tea, Soba, and Sugihara paper at nearby facilities. Other nearby attractions include Lavender Park Taka and Taka Town Leisure Village. For accommodation, facilities such as 'Edel Sasayuri' or 'Cocoron Naka' are available within the town.
