Iwai Falls is a stunning waterfall located deep within the mountains of northern Okayama Prefecture. Its most distinctive feature is its structure, which allows visitors to walk behind the curtain of falling water. This unique layout offers a rare perspective, enabling travelers to view the flow of water from both the front and the rear, creating a truly mystical and immersive experience.
The surrounding area is blessed with a rich natural environment. Approximately 100 meters downstream from the falls, a pure spring known as 'Iwai' emerges. This spring was officially selected as one of the '100 Best Waterscapes' in 1985. According to local legend, the waters possess special qualities, with stories passed down through generations that drinking from these springs brings blessings of fertility and healthy children, making it a sacred site for the local community.
The greatest allure of Iwai Falls is the ability to access the space behind the waterfall through a passage under a massive rock formation. Navigating through this natural stone chamber offers a sensation that is difficult to find in daily life. While the seasons change the surrounding scenery, please note that access is currently restricted due to safety concerns and environmental changes. It is essential to check the latest status before planning a visit.
The landscape around Iwai Falls changes beautifully with the seasons. During winter (late December to early April), access may be further restricted due to heavy snowfall. However, during the seasons when the snow melts and water flows abundantly, you can feel the powerful energy of nature. We recommend visiting during bright daylight hours to fully appreciate the transparency of the water and the intricate textures of the surrounding rock walls.
Originally, the site offered the incredible experience of walking behind the waterfall to feel the power of nature up close. However, due to risks of landslides caused by heavy rain and typhoons, certain areas—including the forest roads leading to the trails and parking lots—are currently closed to the public. While waiting for future restoration, visitors are encouraged to enjoy the breathtaking views of the natural environment from a safe distance.
The area surrounding Iwai Falls is filled with lush greenery. For instance, the nearby Onbara Plateau offers beautiful alpine plants depending on the season. You might also consider combining a visit with other natural spots in the Okutsu Valley area to enjoy a complete tour of northern Okayama's natural wonders.
