Iwadoneyama Maruyama Park is situated at the foot of Mt. Iwadoneyama in the northern part of Otsuki City, Yamanashi Prefecture. This region is celebrated as one of the best places in Japan to view Mt. Fuji. Located halfway up the 634m elevation of Mt. Iwadoneyama, the landscape is characterized by dramatic rocky cliffs. The park offers a changing tapestry of natural beauty: in spring, over 300 cherry trees bloom in spectacular fashion, while in May, approximately 600 azaleas paint the mountainside in vibrant colors. Please note that due to rockfall prevention measures, access to the very summit may be restricted, but the park area itself provides magnificent views of nature and Mt. Fuji.
The area has a deep history, dating back to the late 9th century when it was established as the Entsu-ji Temple of the Tendai sect. For centuries, it served as a site for Shugendo (ascetic mountain worship), blending nature with spiritual practice. Later, in the 16th century, the area fell under the control of the Takeda and Oyamada clans, serving as the site of Iwadone Castle. Today, this historic landscape is preserved as a beloved public space and is officially designated as one of the top 100 scenic views of Mt. Fuji in the Kanto region.
The defining feature of Iwadoneyama Maruyama Park is its seasonal floral displays. In late March to early April, the "Sakura Matsuri" (Cherry Blossom Festival) takes place, featuring beautiful night-time illuminations. In early summer (May), the landscape is transformed by roughly 600 blooming azaleas, including varieties like Yama-tsutsuji and Satsuki, covering the mountain in vivid hues. Additionally, the park offers a majestic, unobstructed view of Mt. Fuji, allowing visitors to witness the changing silhouette of the mountain alongside the shifting seasons.
The most highly recommended time is from late March to early April during the peak cherry blossom season, especially to experience the magical atmosphere of the night-time illuminations. For the azalea season in May, visiting during the bright daylight hours is best to appreciate the colorful mountain slopes. To enjoy the clearest views of Mt. Fuji, we recommend visiting in the early morning when the air is crisp and clear, or during a bright, sunny-day afternoon.
Visitors can enjoy leisurely strolls while observing seasonal flora. While paths are maintained, some sections of the trails leading toward the 634m elevation can be steep, so preparation is advised. Please be aware that access to the summit may be restricted due to rockfall risks; always check the latest safety status before your visit. The park is also a perfect location for picnics and photography with the iconic backdrop of Mt. Fuji.
Near the park, you can visit the "Iwadoneyama Nature and History Center" to learn more about the local environment. The park is also within walking distance of Otsuki Station, making it easy to explore the local town and dining options. The surrounding area is an excellent base for driving or walking tours due to its numerous scenic viewpoints.
We recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes or trekking shoes, as some areas have slopes and uneven terrain. Since temperatures fluctuate by season, bring layers for easy adjustment. Please carry cash, as it may be required for local facilities or parking. Due to current safety restrictions regarding the summit, please stay within the designated park areas and follow all local signage.
