Gandatekyo Gorge, located in Kosaka Town, Gero City, Gifu Prefecture, is a geological marvel formed by andesitic lava flows approximately 54,000 years ago. It is renowned for possessing what is considered the most significant lava flow cross-section in Japan. Designated as a Natural Monument of Gifu Prefecture, the site offers a spectacular view of a green belt-like lava flow stretching across the landscape, easily visible from the Ontake Panorama Line. Historically, this area was once connected to the downstream Ko-Gandate, but the flow was severed by the erosion of the Sasara Valley, creating a dramatic disconnection of about 300 meters.
The landscape was shaped by intense volcanic activity roughly 54,000 years ago. While the lava flow was once a continuous path, the natural process of erosion by the Sasara Valley caused a break in the formation, resulting in the unique, disconnected shape seen today. Due to its extreme geological rarity, it is officially designated as a Natural Monument of Gifu Prefecture. Its striking beauty has even earned it the nickname "The Green Grand Canyon."
The primary attraction is the sheer, towering andesitic rock walls. These walls extend for 17 kilometers upstream, allowing visitors to observe a massive, natural cross-section of the earth. When driving along the Ontake Panorama Line, you can enjoy the sweeping view of the lava flow that resembles a lush green ribbon across the mountains. Additionally, the area features the "Amadori Rock," a massive lava structure reaching approximately 150 meters in height.
The gorge is accessible from late March to mid-December. Please note that during the winter season (January to March), the information center, shops, and restrooms are closed. For the best experience, visit during bright daylight hours to clearly observe the intricate textures of the rock walls and the dramatic details of the lava cross-sections.
Visitors can experience the awe-inspiring scale of nature by observing the massive rock walls and the unique structure of the severed lava flows. The area is well-maintained, allowing for easy walks to get a close-up view of the geological formations. Driving through the Ontake Panorama Line provides a grand-scale scenic tour of the surrounding landscape.
The area around Gandatekyo Gorge is characterized by the rich natural environment of Gero City. The Ontake Panorama Line serves as an excellent driving route, offering breathtaking vistas from your car window. There are various other spots throughout the Kosaka area to enjoy the serene natural scenery of Gifu.
A contribution of 300 JPY per person is required as an Environmental Maintenance Fee. Please ensure you carry cash for this payment.

Photography of the landscape is permitted; however, please be respectful of the natural environment and avoid disturbing the site.
We recommend wearing comfortable, practical clothing suitable for walking and light hiking. If you are traveling with pets, a leash is mandatory.
Regarding wheelchair accessibility, please check the local conditions upon arrival as the terrain is a natural park.
If accompanied by pets, please keep them on a leash and carry waste disposal tools (scoops or bags). Please take all trash home with you. Also, be aware that the ambient sounds of nature, such as nearby waterfalls, may change the atmosphere of the area.
