Itoyama Observatory is a premier viewing facility located along the Shimanami Kaido in Imabari City, Ehime Prefecture. From this vantage point, you can enjoy a 360-degree unobstructed view of the Kurushima Kaikyo Bridge, the scattered islands of the Seto Inland Sea, and the various vessels navigating the strait. Because it is situated at a higher altitude than the adjacent Kurushima Kaikyo Observatory, it provides an even more expansive and dramatic view of the landscape. It is also a key stop for those cycling the Shimanami Kaido, being easily accessible from the Sunrise Ituyama hub.
The region has long been known as a vital maritime strategic point. Historically, the area was controlled by the Murakami Pirates (naval warriors) from the Kamakura period through the Nanboku-cho and Muromachi periods. During the Meiji era through the 1950s, red lighthouses were also established here to ensure maritime safety. Today, the surrounding facilities serve to preserve this heritage, featuring exhibits on the engineering technology of the Kurushima Kaikyo Bridge and historical documents that convey the unique cultural and geographical characteristics of the region.
The primary draw of Itoyama Observatory is the magnificent view of the Kurushima Kaikyo Bridge directly ahead. Visitors can witness the unique beauty of the many islands characteristic of the Seto Inland Sea, the complex tidal currents, and the movement of large ships passing through the strait. The 360-degree panoramic view allows for a complete understanding of the surrounding island layout. Near the site, you can also find cultural markers such as the 'Umi e' statue by Kaito Takashina, poetry monuments by Ujo Noguchi, and other historical stone monuments.
The scenery changes beautifully depending on the season, tides, and weather. In the early morning, you may witness sea mists or a stunning sunrise over the water. During the day, the area is lively with the movement of ships, vehicles crossing the bridge, and cyclists. At night, the landscape is illuminated by the lights of the bridge, nearby lighthouses, and the navigation lights of passing ships. Beyond sightseeing, the area is a popular spot for cyclists to rest and gather information. Sunrise Ituyama, located nearby, serves as a major rental cycle hub, making this a frequent stop for travelers. Visitors can use binoculars to observe the distant islands and maritime activity in detail. Additionally, the nearby Kurushima Kaikyo Observatory features exhibition rooms for learning and shops where you can purchase local specialties such as citrus fruits and Imabari towels.
Directly adjacent to the observatory is the Kurushima Kaikyo Observatory, which provides exhibition rooms regarding bridge engineering, a shop, and restrooms, along with a dedicated parking area. Other nearby points of interest include the Ryokan Ooshio, the cycling hub Sunrise Ituyama, and Shimoda Water Port, which serves as a departure point for rapid current cruises toward Oshima Island.
For purchases at nearby shops or facilities, cash and credit cards (such as Visa and MasterCard) are generally accepted. However, please check local signage for any restrictions regarding the outdoor viewing areas.
English-language signage, exhibits, and staff assistance are often available at the nearby Kurushima Kaikyo Observatory facilities.
No prior reservation is required to access the observatory area.
As the outdoor viewing area is highly exposed to the wind, we recommend wearing clothing that provides wind protection. Bringing binoculars is highly recommended for a detailed view of the distant islands and ships.
Photography is permitted; however, please follow local rules regarding the use of tripods or commercial photography.
While the nearby Kurushima Kaikyo Observatory offers wheelchair-accessible parking, please note that the paths leading to the Itoyama Observatory may include slopes or stairs.
