Itoshiro Onsen is a tranquil hot spring village located at the uppermost reaches of the Nakagawa River, at the western edge of the Nasu Mountain Range in Nasushiobara City, Tochigi Prefecture. With a history spanning over a millennium, it has long been celebrated as the 'Medicinal Hot Spring of Shimotsue.' In 1971, it was designated as a National Wellness Hot Spring Area, and today it is recognized as a premier destination for relaxation and rejuvenation. Situated within the scenic Nikko National Park, the area offers much more than just hot springs; it is a hub for various outdoor activities that allow visitors to fully immerse themselves in the surrounding natural environment.
The history of this region dates back to the Heian period (1059). It is said that Nasu Mune-shige, a local lord of the Nasu district, discovered the hot springs while hunting in the area. Following this discovery, the local residents of Itoshiro began establishing inns, shaping the area into a structured hot spring resort. During the early modern period, it became one of the famous 'Nasu Seven Hot Springs,' attracting many travelers seeking healing. The area is also known as the 'Spring of No Need for a Cane,' referring to the belief that the waters were so restorative that people could leave their walking sticks behind after treatment. This deep-rooted history continues to preserve the traditional 'Toji' (healing stay) culture today.

Itoshiro Onsen is dotted with unique cultural sites and stunning landscapes. A standout feature is the 'Tsuna-no-yu' (Rope Bathing) method. This traditional technique involves holding onto a rope attached to the beams of a bathhouse while soaking in water deeper than the waist, utilizing water pressure for therapeutic benefits. The village also hosts sacred sites like Itoshiro Onsen Shrine, Kamo Iwajiri Shrine, and Kinomata Jizo, where people have prayed for healing for centuries. For nature lovers, the Otome Falls and the Numappara Wetlands—home to diverse alpine flora—offer a close encounter with the rich ecosystem of Nikko National Park.
Each season brings a different face to Itoshiro Onsen. From May to October, it is an ideal time for trekking through the Numappara Wetlands to observe alpine plants like Nikko Kisuge (daylilies) and Eriopodium. In the summer, visitors often gather near the riverbanks of Otome Falls to enjoy the cool breeze. In winter, the landscape is covered in snow, making it a perfect time for a cozy, restorative stay in a hot spring. Additionally, the 'Itoshiro Onsen Dondo-yaki' festival held in January provides a wonderful opportunity to experience local community traditions.
Beyond soaking in the hot springs, the area serves as a vast natural playground. The region is a base for mountain climbing toward the Nasu peaks and offers various trekking routes. At the Numappara Wetlands, well-maintained wooden boardwalks allow for easy observation of wildflowers and wildlife. Furthermore, the area is embracing modern trends through 'Modern Toji Workations,' offering a unique way to work remotely while enjoying the healing atmosphere of a traditional hot spring village.
The vicinity is rich with natural landmarks. Otome Falls is a popular spot for cooling off during the summer months. Nearby, the Miyama Dam and its lake provide a dramatic landscape of rolling mountains and water. The Numappara Wetlands also serve as a vital starting point for hikers exploring the Nasu mountain range, acting as a central hub for nature observation.
