The Italian Embassy Villa Memorial Park is a serene park located on the shores of Lake Chuzenji in Nikko, Tochigi Prefecture. The main villa was constructed in 1928, designed by the renowned American architect Antonin Raymond. The site holds a significant historical legacy, having served as the Italian Embassy until 1997. Today, it is maintained and opened to the public by the Tochigi Prefecture. The architecture is a registered tangible cultural property, celebrated for the harmonious blend of Western architectural elegance and the natural beauty of the Japanese landscape.
This location is part of a rich history where numerous foreign embassies established summer villas along the shores of Lake Chuzenji during the Meiji era. Historically, Nikko was such a prestigious destination that it was often said the Ministry of Foreign Affairs would relocate to the area during the summer. From 1928 to 1997, the site served as the Italian Embassy, hosting many successive Italian ambassadors. Currently, the site functions as a cultural facility and park, where the buildings have been carefully restored and preserved to share this history with the world.
The complex consists of two main buildings: the Main Villa and the Annex. The Main Villa features a living room, terrace, and bedrooms, displaying original furniture, bedding, fireplaces, and exquisite furnishings from that era. The Annex serves as the International Resort History Museum, detailing the history of the area. The interior and exterior are adorned with unique cedar bark decorations, and visitors can find diverse ornamental details on the walls and ceilings. From the Main Villa's terrace, you can enjoy panoramic views of Lake Chuzenji, Mount Nikko-Shirane, Mount Hangetsu, Hatcho Ojima, and Mount Nantai visible from the pier.
The park is open year-round, offering a different atmosphere in every season. You can experience lush greenery in spring and summer, vibrant autumn colors in the fall, and serene snowy landscapes in winter. Visitors can easily access the area via the Lake Chuzenji sightseeing cruise (operating from July to November), which stops near the pier. We recommend visiting during daylight hours to fully appreciate the intricate architectural details and the brilliant colors of the lake.
The park features well-maintained paths, bridges, and piers, making it an ideal place for a leisurely stroll. Inside the Main Villa, you can observe the architectural styles and lifestyle of the past through preserved furnishings. The terrace and pier provide exceptional vantage points for photography, capturing the majestic scenery of Lake Chuzenji and the surrounding mountains like Mount Nikko-Shirane.
The nearby British Embassy Villa Memorial Park is another must-visit historical site. It is common for travelers to visit both locations in one trip to experience the different architectural legacies. Additionally, the area is close to iconic Nikko natural landmarks such as Kegon Falls and Mount Hangetsu.
As the grounds include slopes and small paths, we highly recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes. Payments can be made via cash or credit card. Since this is a protected cultural property, please handle the buildings and interior items with extreme care. While there is wheelchair-accessible parking available, please be mindful of the uneven terrain, including paths and stairs.
