Lake Ippeki is a magnificent caldera lake formed by a volcanic eruption approximately 100,000 years ago. The lake surface acts as a natural mirror, reflecting the surrounding mountains, lush greenery, and the drifting white clouds of the sky. One of its most unique features is the presence of Chojisou, a rare plant species that is said to grow naturally only in Shizuoka Prefecture. Because the landscape changes dramatically with each season, every visit offers a unique and unforgettable view.
The lake holds a deep geological history as a caldera lake born from intense volcanic activity. This natural formation has long been cherished as a scenic landmark of the region. By observing the preserved natural environment and the unique local flora, visitors can feel the profound history of the volcanic processes that shaped this land.
The greatest attraction is the breathtaking reflection of nature on the water's surface. The sight of the mountains and sky mirrored perfectly in the calm lake is the iconic image of Lake Ippeki. The scenery evolves beautifully throughout the year. During the autumn foliage season, the surrounding trees turn vibrant shades of red and gold, adding a colorful frame to the lake. March, April, and October are particularly beautiful times to visit to experience the seasonal transitions. Please note that for safety and management reasons, certain sections of the walking paths (specifically the northwest shore near the Koyo Plaza and Daiike Elementary School area) may be subject to temporary closures. It is highly recommended to check the latest regulation information before your visit.
As a scenic natural site, the primary activity is strolling along the lakeside. Walking through the natural environment allows you to breathe in the fresh air while admiring the mountains and sky. It is an ideal place for plant observation and photography. However, please be mindful of any path restrictions that may be in place during your visit.
Lake Ippeki is located near several famous tourist spots in the Izu and Ito areas. You can easily combine a visit to the lake with trips to the dramatic cliffs of the Jogasaki Coast or the 360-degree panoramic views of Mount Omuro. It is a perfect addition to a nature-focused itinerary in Ito City.
