Isonoura Beach is a beautiful coastline located in Wakayama City, Wakayama Prefecture. The most significant feature of this location is that it is a premier spot where you can enjoy surfing throughout the entire year. Particularly during the summer season (from July 1st to August 31st), the beach is strictly divided into a general swimming area and a dedicated surfing area. This organized zoning provides a safe environment for families with small children to enjoy the ocean without worry.
This beach has a long history of being a beloved destination for local residents and visitors from the nearby Osaka area. It is often affectionately referred to as "Isoko" by locals and frequent visitors from Osaka, serving as a deeply rooted leisure hub for the region. Today, the beach is managed and operated by the Marine Park Isonoura Association. This organization is dedicated to maintaining the beach's beauty, providing disaster prevention information, and promoting regional revitalization. It is not just a leisure facility, but a place focused on environmental preservation and community safety.

At Isonoura Beach, you can enjoy surfing tailored to various wave conditions. During the peak summer season, the designated swimming area allows for a calm experience away from the waves, making it ideal for casual beachgoers. The coastline is well-equipped with essential facilities such as lockers, showers, and restrooms, ensuring a smooth and comfortable experience. There are also various facilities nearby where you can take a break or enjoy a meal.
While the beach is excellent for surfing year-round, the best time for swimming is during the summer months of July and August. During this period, the designated swimming zones are active, making it the perfect time for family outings. For surfers, the beach is a great destination in any season, provided you check the local wave reports. Although the beach area is open 24 hours, it is highly recommended to check local signage and management information regarding seasonal rules and zoning during the summer months.
The primary activities here are surfing and swimming. However, for safety reasons, windsurfing, kitesurfing, and Stand-Up Paddleboarding (SUP) are strictly prohibited year-round. Please note that bodyboarding is permitted within the general swimming areas. Depending on the wave conditions, you can choose from various styles of marine sports within the permitted guidelines.
The area around the coast features various facilities for resting and changing clothes. The beach is also a popular stop along the scenic driving routes that stretch along the Wakayama coastline, offering a great way to see the local scenery. Most visitors access the beach by car, and ample parking is available nearby.
To enjoy your time at the beach, please prepare swimwear, a change of clothes, towels, and sunscreen. If you are planning to surf, you will also need your board and a wetsuit. For those with a physical disability certificate, please note that there is a system to receive a 50% discount on parking fees. If you are organizing an event or a school, a formal notification must be submitted in advance. We ask all visitors to follow the rules and act with consideration for others' safety.
