Mount Ishiwari (Ishiwari-yama) is a mountain with an elevation of 1,413m, located on the border of Yamanaka-ko Village, Tsuru City, and Oshino Village in Yamanashi Prefecture. As the highest peak in the Lake Yamanaka area, its summit provides a wide-open topography that allows visitors to gaze upon Mt. Fuji, Lake Yamanica, and the Southern Alps. The most distinctive feature of this mountain is the Ishiwari Shrine located near the summit. Here, a massive rock split in the center stands approximately 15 meters high, serving as a sacred object (Goshintai) and a symbol of the powerful forces of nature.
The Ishiwari Shrine is said to be related to the legend of 'Amano-Iwato' (the Heavenly Rock Cave) found in the Kojiki. The shrine enshrines the deity Ameno-Tajikara-o, a god of immense strength, and has long been a site of worship for good luck and success in sports. Historical records from 1814 describe the massive rock split perfectly in two, which is how the name 'Ishiwari' (meaning 'split stone') was given. It has been a site of nature worship for many centuries.
The highlight of a hike up Mt. Ishiwari is undoubtedly the sacred rock of Ishiwari Shrine. It is believed that if you walk around the gap of the split rock three times in a clockwise direction, your wishes will come true or you will receive good fortune. Additionally, the summit offers a majestic view of the full silhouette of Mt. Fuji and the beautiful scenery of Lake Yamanaka below. Other notable points include the 'Fujimi-dai' lookout and the lush, natural mountain paths that offer a serene atmosphere.
While Mt. Ishiwari is accessible year-round, the scenery changes beautifully with the seasons. From spring to summer, the mountain is wrapped in lush greenery and refreshing air from Lake Yamanaka. In autumn, you can enjoy vibrant foliage, and in winter, the landscape is covered in snow. Since the summit is at 1,413m, proper seasonal gear is essential. For the best visibility of Mt. Fuji and the Southern Alps, it is highly recommended to hike during the daylight hours.
This area is perfect for hiking and exploring nature. Visiting Ishiwari Shrine is more than just a hike; it is an opportunity to touch upon traditional Japanese spiritual culture. At the summit, you can capture stunning photographs with Mt. Fuji as your backdrop. The hiking routes typically start from the Hirano Bus Stop or the Yamanaka Lake Exchange Plaza (Kira-ra), catering to levels from beginners to intermediate hikers.
After your descent, you can relax at nearby hot spring facilities. For instance, 'Ishiwari-no-yu' near Lake Yamanaka is an excellent place to soothe your muscles after a hike. The Yamanaka Lake Exchange Plaza (Kira-ra) also serves as a great base for starting your hike, offering amenities such as parking and restrooms.
Proper preparation is vital for Mt. Ishiwari. Although the trails are maintained, the path to Ishiwari Shrine includes 403 steps and some steep inclines, so sturdy hiking boots or trekking shoes are highly recommended. Because weather conditions at the summit can change rapidly, please bring warm layers and rainwear. Always carry enough water for hydration. As a matter of etiquette, please carry all your trash back with you and respect the local flora and rocks. Note that during certain maintenance periods (such as in June or November), you may encounter noise from chainsaw-related trail work.
