Ishiwari-zakura is a famous cherry blossom spot with an incredibly unique landscape, located on the grounds of the Morioka District Court in Morioka City, Iwate Prefecture. The most striking feature, as its name suggests, is the Edohigan cherry tree that has grown by literally "splitting a massive rock." This giant tree, with a trunk circumference of 4.3 meters and a height of 10 meters, has taken root by embracing a massive 21-meter wide granite rock. The sight of this tree, embodying both the harshness of nature and the powerful resilience required to bloom through it, is truly overwhelming. This cherry tree was designated as a National Natural Monument in 1923. With an estimated age of approximately 360 years, it is a historic tree that has watched over this land for centuries. It has been carefully managed and protected under the unique environmental condition of growing through a massive rock. The presence of several support poles used to stabilize the tree reflects the deep affection and long history of management by the local community to pass this precious cultural asset to the next generation. Ishiwari-zakura is located on the grounds of the Morioka District Court, but it is possible to view the tree from the sidewalk even outside of official hours. Comfortable clothing is recommended for walking.
