Ishigakiyama Castle is a historic castle site located in Odawara City, Kanagawa Prefecture. Formerly known as Kasagake-yama, it earned the name 'Ishigakiyama' (Stone Wall Mountain) due to the massive stone fortifications built by Toyotomi Hideyoshi during his siege of Odawara Castle. The site features 'Nozura-zumi' stone walls, a technique using natural stones, and is currently protected as a National Park area and a Nationally Designated Historic Site. In 2017, it was officially selected as one of the 'Continued Top 100 Japanese Castles.'
During the Siege of Odawara in 1590 (Tensho 18), Toyotomi Hideyoshi ordered the construction of this castle to surround and pressure Odawara Castle. A fascinating legend persists that the castle was built in a single night, using white walls to deceive the enemy into thinking it was completed instantly. In reality, the construction was a massive,-scale project that took approximately 80 days. The site serves as a testament to the political and military importance of the era. Beyond its military role, historical records suggest the site hosted tea ceremonies and rituals to welcome imperial messengers, highlighting its multifaceted cultural significance.
The most striking feature of Ishigakiyama Castle is the 'Nozura-zumi' stone walls made of natural, unshaped stones. The walls in the 'Ido-kurawa' area are particularly well-preserved and serve as a direct window into ancient Japanese masonry techniques. The site consists of several defensive enclosures (kurawa), including the Honmaru (Main Enclosure), Ninomaru (Second Enclosure/Stables), Sanmaru (Third Enclosure), Minami-kurawa (South Enclosure), Nishi-kurawa (West Enclosure), and Ido-kurawa (Well Enclosure). Exploring these areas allows visitors to observe the sophisticated defensive structures that utilized the natural terrain. Additionally, the discovery of roof tiles at the former keep site provides physical evidence of the grand towers and watchtowers that once stood here.
Located on a ridge at an altitude of approximately 250m, Ishigakiyama Castle offers a beautiful way to observe historical ruins alongside the changing seasons. The surrounding vegetation is particularly beautiful in spring and autumn, providing a stunning backdrop to the stone walls. While there are no official closing times for the area, we recommend visiting during daylight hours to clearly appreciate the textures of the stone walls and the undulating terrain. Please be mindful of your footing, as paths can become slippery depending on the weather.
The primary way to experience this site is through hiking and exploring the historical ruins on foot. Walking through the various enclosures allows you to physically feel the strategic layout of the ancient fortress.
