The Ishibe Rice Terraces are located in Matsuzaki Town, on the western side of the Izu Peninsula in Shizuoka Prefecture. This site is distinguished by its stone-walling technique, which is rare in Eastern Japan. The terraced fields cover a total area of 4.2 hectares, with approximately 370 plots spread across an elevation ranging from 120m to 250m. There was a period when the area faced abandonment, with 90% of the land covered in weeds; however, thanks to the dedicated revitalization efforts led by local residents since the year 2000, the landscape has been beautifully preserved. Today, it is recognized as a "Tsunagu Tanada Heritage" (Post-Tanada Selection) and serves as a vital symbol of the local community.
The history of these terraces is deep, with certain sections maintaining their original form since the late Edo period. The area has a history of rebuilding after damage caused by mountain tsunamis and landslides. The traditional construction, featuring sturdy stone walls and unique embankments, is a rare architectural feature for the Kanto region. While the site faced the risk of decay in the early 2000s, it has been preserved through community-driven conservation and exchange programs, such as the "Rice Terrace Owner System" established in 2002, which helps pass down this cultural landscape to future generations.
The greatest draw of the Ishibe Rice Terraces is the harmony between the topography and nature. Looking down, you will see the vast expanse of Suruga Bay. Depending on the weather and visibility, you can enjoy magnificent views of Mount Fuji and the Southern Alps in the distance. The visual charm lies in the curved shapes of the rice paddies and the intricate stone-wall structures built with traditional techniques. The changing reflections on the water's surface and the seasonal progression of the rice growth offer a dynamic and ever-changing spectacle.
The landscape offers a different beauty in every season. From spring to summer, you can witness the vibrant contrast between the bright green young rice plants and the deep blue of the sea. In autumn, the fields turn into a shimmering sea of golden rice ears, while in winter, the view of Mount Fuji and the Southern Alps is often framed by a beautiful layer of snow. For the best experience, visit during bright daylight hours to maximize the visibility of Suruga Bay and Mount Fuji.
