Mishakaike Pond is a scenic gem located within the Yatsugatake Chushin Kogen Quasi-National Park in Chino City, Nagano Prefecture, at an altitude of approximately 1,500 meters. This location is widely celebrated as the inspiration for the work 'Echoing Green' by the renowned Japanese painter Kaii Higashiyama. The sight of the water surface becoming perfectly still like a mirror, reflecting the surrounding mountains and trees with crystalline clarity, evokes a deep sense of awe in all who visit. With an area of approximately 0.1 hectares and a maximum depth of 8 meters, the pond is a concentrated essence of nature's silence and beauty.
The pond was originally completed in 1933 as an agricultural reservoir. Historically, the region faced challenges in agriculture due to the cold water, but through the addition of spring water, the environment was optimized for rice cultivation. The name 'Mishaka' is said to derive from the 'Mishayama Mikari' ritual of the Suwa Grand Shrine, suggesting that this land has been regarded as a sacred site since ancient times.
