The Isamu Noguchi Garden Museum is a profound space where you can trace the footsteps of Isamu Noguchi (1904–1988), one of the most influential sculptors of the 20th century. Located in Mure, Takamatsu City, Kagawa Prefecture, this is the site where Noguchi established his studio and residence for over 20 years starting in 1969. Following Noguchi's wishes, the museum preserves the site as an 'environmental sculpture,' integrating his studio, exhibition storehouses, the Isamu Noguchi House, and a sculptural garden into one cohesive experience. The sculptures, thoughtfully placed within the natural landscape, offer visitors a moment of profound serenity and contemplation.
Isamu Noguchi was a versatile artist whose work spanned monuments, gardens, furniture, lighting, and stage design. His connection to this region began in 1956 when he first visited Mure, the source of Aji stone. The museum was established to preserve and pass down the concept of 'universal art' that Noguchi pursued during his time here. Most of the sculptures on display were created in this very location, and the entire facility—including the storehouses and residence—serves as a physical embodiment of his artistic philosophy and his deep connection to the local stone.
The museum's layout extends far beyond a traditional exhibition room. Key areas include the studio (within the stone wall circle), the exhibition storehouses, the area surrounding the Isamu Noguchi House, and the sculptural garden. In the studio, you can feel the atmosphere in which he worked with stone and natural materials. The exhibition storehouses, which Noguchi himself selected and relocated, and the sculptural garden are essential for understanding his concept of 'Earth Sculpture.' The collection includes not only finished masterpieces but also works in progress, allowing visitors to witness the artist's creative process and his dialogue with raw materials.
Visiting hours vary depending on the season. From January to June and September to December, there are three viewing slots per day: 10:00, 13:00, and 15:00. During July and August, there are two slots: 10:00 and 11:30. The changing light and wind patterns throughout the seasons offer a different perspective on the landscape each time you visit. The quietude of the late afternoon is particularly magical, as the boundary between the art and the environment seems to dissolve. Please note that there may be separate closing days during the winter period (late December to early January) and the summer peak (mid-August), so checking the schedule in advance is highly recommended.

As you will be walking through the outdoor sculptural garden and around the studio, we highly recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes.
