Irozaki is a significant scenic spot within the Izu Peninsula Geopark, located at the southernmost tip of Shizuoka Prefecture. The landscape is characterized by a rugged coastline formed by intense volcanic activity and the topography resulting from the eruption of the Minamisaki Volcano. The coastline features steep cliffs carved by years of wave erosion, while the area known as "Ikenohara" consists of gentle hills influenced by volcanic activity. It is a place where the beauty of natural formations harmonizes perfectly with the seasonal flora.
The topography of this region is closely linked to the Minasaki Volcano, which erupted approximately 400,000 years ago. Much of the coastline is composed of volcanic ash and lava erupted from submarine volcanoes. The terrain around Irozaki was shaped by the movement of lava flows and the accumulation of volcanic ash. Additionally, the area holds historical significance with sites such as Ishimuro Shrine, representing a place where nature and spiritual beliefs have long been intertwined.
The greatest charm of Irozaki lies in its diverse and contrasting topography, transitioning from the sea to the land. You can witness the striking contrast between the sheer, vertical cliffs and the gentle hills where the Ruta incana flowers bloom. In particular, viewing the scenery from a sightseeing boat offers a rare opportunity to observe volcanic geological layers and lava flows that are impossible to see from the land. The landscape displays a complex palette of colors, blending white rock, gray volcanic lava, and reddish-brown scoria.
You can enjoy different expressions of nature depending on the season. In the summer (July–August), the Ruta incana flowers are in full bloom, creating a beautiful sight especially during the late afternoon. In winter, the crisp air provides a perfect setting to admire the powerful and imposing cliff scenery. Regarding timing, the change in light during sunset and the approach from the sea via sightseeing boats are highly recommended points of interest.
There are many ways to experience the geological wonders of Irozaki. By taking a sightseeing boat (Izu Cruise) from Irozaki Port, you can observe the Ruta incera Park and the rugged coastline from a maritime perspective. Additionally, there are opportunities for more specialized exploration, such as guided tours led by certified Geoguides or even geological tours using kayaks, allowing for a deep, professional observation of the natural environment.

Due to the nature of the terrain, you will be walking along coastlines and hilly areas. It is highly recommended to wear stable, comfortable walking shoes. It is also recommended to check the availability of English signage or staff support at certain facilities before your visit.
