Iyarishi Wetland is a low-altitude wetland located in the northern part of Azumino, Omachi City, Nagano Prefecture, situated east of Lake Kizaki. Spanning an area of approximately 130m in width and 500m to 1500m in length, it is officially designated as a natural monument of Nagano Prefecture. The area features well-maintained paths and boardwalks that are relatively flat, making it an easy and accessible way to observe the delicate ecosystem without much physical strain. It is widely known as a quiet, secluded spot where visitors can truly connect with nature away from the crowds.
This region has preserved its rich natural environment since ancient times. The diverse flora that grows around the wetland is carefully protected as a natural monument of Nagano Prefecture. The unique topography and vegetation serve as vital elements that tell the story of the region's natural history and ecological evolution.
The greatest charm of Iyarishi Wetland lies in its ever-changing seasonal scenery. In April, visitors can observe the beauty of Skunk Cabbage (Zaensou), Golden Alexanders, and Mizubasho. In early May, the landscape is colored by the foliage of the even more vibrant plants, and during the rainy season, the deep purple hues of Siberian Iris (Kakitsubata) and Iris become a stunning sight. Walking along the sturdy wooden boardwalks allows you to experience these botanical wonders up close.
The best time to visit depends on what you wish to see. From late March to early May, you can enjoy Skunk Cabbage and Magnolia blossoms. In June, the Siberian Iris reaches its peak bloom. For a unique winter experience, visitors can access the vicinity using a 4WD vehicle and observe the frozen landscape using snowshoes, offering a completely different perspective of the wetland's stillness.
The area is equipped with a walking trail perfect for nature observation. Along the circular route, you can find information boards, such as the 'Wetland Concept Map' located near the benches, to deepen your understanding of the local topography and plant life. Additionally, the nearby 'Iyarishi Ichibansui' spring allows you to feel the refreshing presence of natural flowing water.
Lake Kizaki is located very close to Iyarishi Wetland. After a peaceful stroll through the wetlands, visitors can easily move to the lakeside area to enjoy the scenic views and the surrounding mountain landscapes.
To protect this fragile ecosystem, strict adherence to nature conservation rules is required. It is strictly prohibited to step off the boardwalk into the wetland for photography or any other reason. Please wear comfortable walking shoes suitable for the wooden paths. Given the natural setting, it is recommended to prepare for changing weather conditions during your visit.
