IOX-AROSA is a premier ski resort located on the eastern slope of Mt. Oi in Nanto City, Toyama Prefecture. Through its partnership with Arosa, Switzerland, the resort offers a unique European-style landscape and facilities rarely seen in Japan. The name "IOX" combines "IO" from Mt. Oi and "X" representing unknown possibilities, while "AROSA" honors the Swiss town, creating an international atmosphere. In winter, visitors can enjoy skiing, snowboarding, and spectacular night skiing via gondola. In summer, the resort transforms into a hub for mountain biking, dog runs, and auto-camping, providing diverse leisure-oriented experiences throughout the year.
Established in 1990, the resort signed a friendship agreement with Arosa, Switzerland, in 1991. This partnership led to the development of European-style facilities such as cottages and a chapel, establishing its status as a "Swiss-style ski resort" in Japan. In 1992, the completion of the "IOX Wald" Swiss-style cottages solidified its foundation as a full-scale resort rather than just a ski slope. The resort also holds a cultural history, having hosted vocal music seminars and other events. Recently, in 2023, it has continued to evolve to meet modern leisure needs with the addition of a mountain terrace and expanded dog run facilities.
The greatest draw is the dynamic course layout utilizing the elevation changes. Guests can enjoy long cruising runs spanning 3,100 meters, with smooth transport provided by gondolas. During winter, it is one of the few places in Japan offering night skiing under illuminated lights. From the upper slopes, visitors can enjoy a breathtaking view of the traditional 'Sankyo Village' landscape in the Tonami Plain. In summer, the scenery changes completely, offering mountain bike courses, motor sports activities in the large parking areas, and a dedicated dog run, ensuring a different charm every season.
Winter (December–March) is the peak season for skiing and snowboarding. January and February are particularly recommended for long-distance cruising due to stable snow quality. For a magical experience, try the night skiing sessions (typically 17:30–21:00) under the lights. Summer (June–September) is ideal for outdoor activities like mountain biking, dog runs, and auto-camping in the cool highland air. In autumn, the landscape is also beautiful with seasonal flora like yellow cosmos blooming.
A wide variety of seasonal leisure activities are available. Winter focuses on skiing, snowboarding, and gondola-assisted night skiing. The resort also features "Iotti Land," an indoor play area, and "IOX Kurum," an on-site hot spring facility, making it perfect for family trips. During the off-season, visitors can experience nature through mountain biking, dog runs, and camping. It also serves as an excellent base for hiking and mountain climbing.
Located in Nanto City, the resort is surrounded by the historic 'Sankyo Village' landscape. It also serves as a gateway to Toyama's rich natural heritage, including the nearby Tateyama mountain range and its world-class limestone cave systems. During the winter season, temporary buses often run from Toyama City, making it accessible for travelers.
When visiting in winter, please prepare high-quality thermal wear, gloves, goggles, and your skiing/snowboarding gear. Rental shops are fully equipped, so you can visit without your own gear. For payments, cash, PayPay, and some credit cards are accepted. If using the dog run, please keep your dog on a leash and follow all etiquette. While English-speaking staff and signage vary by facility, checking basic signs will ensure a smooth experience. We recommend checking in advance for rentals or specific facility usage.
