Ioki Cave is a natural sea cave situated in Aki City, Kochi Prefecture. This cave was formed through the erosive power of waves during an era when the surrounding area was part of the sea. Stepping into this space, which measures approximately 5m in height, 4m in width, and 40m in length, feels like traveling back in time tens of thousands of years. The interior offers a unique and mystical atmosphere. Deep within the cave, the path leads toward a valley where you can observe water flowing continuously. Furthermore, certain sections of the cave walls reveal shell fossils, serving as a precious geological record of the Earth's history.
The most striking feature of this site is the dense community of ferns surrounding the cave. The walls and the nearby valley are home to a diverse array of plants, primarily tropical ferns. Species such as Polypodium vulgare, Asplenium japonicum, and various other ferns are present, with over 40 species identified in total. It is extremely rare to find such a high concentration of diverse fern species in a single location, and this community is officially designated as a National Natural Monument. This landscape is carefully preserved as a significant historical and natural site shaped by the continuous processes of nature.
The allure of Ioki Cave lies in its unique topography and vegetation. As you move from the entrance into the depths of the cave, the scenery shifts constantly. The shell fossils embedded in the walls and the sight of flowing water evoke the memory of when this area was once an ocean. The lush fern community surrounding the cave offers a vibrant, life-filled landscape rarely seen in daily life. The harmony between the natural rock formations and the thriving plant life provides visitors with a sense of profound tranquility and awe.
Preparation is essential for exploring Iaki Cave due to the natural environment. As the terrain can be unstable, we strongly recommend wearing sturdy walking shoes or hiking boots. If it has rained recently, the ground may be muddy and slippery; in such cases, rubber boots are very useful. During summer, please avoid wearing sandals, as there is a possibility of encountering wildlife like Mamushi (pit vipers). While there is no admission fee for general exploration and no reservation is required, please respect the environment by not picking plants and ensuring all trash is carried out.
If you choose to use a professional guided course, payments can be made via cash or PayPay. For standard independent exploration, there is no admission fee.
English-language support is limited. The experience is primarily a self-guided nature walk, and signage may be limited.

Please note that the terrain is very uneven and unstable. The cave is not suitable for wheelchairs or walkers. Visitors with mobility concerns should exercise caution due to the many steps and uneven surfaces.
