Perched on a hill approximately 88 meters above sea level on the southern bank of the Kiso River in Inuyama City, Aichi Prefecture, Inuyama Castle is a celebrated National Treasure of Japan. It is renowned as one of the oldest of the twelve remaining original castle keeps in the country. Its elegant silhouette and historical significance continue to fascinate visitors from around the world. It is also a famous viewpoint for overlooking the majestic flow of the Kiso River, offering a chance to experience the essence of Japanese castle architecture alongside the changing beauty of the seasons.
The history of Inuyama Castle dates back to the Tenbun era (around 1537), when it was constructed by Nobuyasu Oda, the uncle of the famous warlord Oda Nobunaga. Due to its strategic position along the Kiso River, it developed as a vital hub for logistics and politics along the Nakasendo and Kiso Kaido routes. Over the centuries, the castle was ruled by various powerful figures, including the Ikeda clan and Ishikawa Sadakiyo under the Toyotomi regime. During the Edo period, the Naruse clan, high-ranking vassals of the Tokugawa Shogunate, served as the lords of the castle, leading to many of the structural improvements seen today. Although the site faced challenges during the Meiji era when many surrounding buildings were demolished, it is now carefully preserved and managed by the Inuyama Castle Hakutei Bunko Foundation.
The greatest draw is undoubtedly the original castle keep (tenshu). While the interior space is quite limited, the view of the vast Kiso River from the top is truly overwhelming and breathtaking. The very structure of the castle serves as a living historical document, illustrating the defensive roles of a fortification during the Sengoku (Warring States) period. As you climb the stairs to the top, you will experience the steep and narrow passages characteristic of ancient architectural techniques, providing a rare and visceral connection to the past.

In spring, the surrounding area is adorned with beautiful cherry blossoms, while autumn brings vibrant foliage that colors the landscape around the Kiso River. The area around Inuyama Castle is well-equipped with many tourist-friendly facilities. The castle town (Jokamachi) is dotted with restaurants and rest areas where you can enjoy a stroll through a historic atmosphere. Visitors can also enjoy viewing the illuminated castle from the opposite bank of the Kiso River, making the entire area feel like a beautifully preserved historical theme park.
Because the stairs inside the castle keep are quite steep and narrow, we strongly recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes and clothing that allows ease of movement. Please note that footwear must be removed before entering the castle tower; footwear bags are typically provided at the entrance. To ensure a smooth visit, we suggest using the coin lockers located near the ticket booth or the Inuyama Castle Tourist Information Center, as large bags are not permitted inside the tower. For the safety of the site, fire is strictly prohibited. Additionally, the use of drones for photography or flight is prohibited, and pets (excluding service animals) are not allowed on the premises.
