Inomata no Hyakuhatto is a traditional ritual held on the ridge of Dozenzan Mountain in Inomata, Misato Town, Saitama Prefecture. Every year on the night of August 15, fire is lit upon 108 mounds, creating a striking visual spectacle. This event is designated as a National Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property, preserving the essence of traditional Japanese rituals. The unique method of lighting fires atop 108 mounds is a rare feature among Obon-related traditions in Japan.
The ritual is said to be performed to honor the spirit of Inomata Kohei Rokunatsuna, a member of the Musashi Shichito (Seven Musashi Clans). With a history spanning several centuries, this tradition is deeply rooted in the local community. The practice of lighting fires on mounds reflects the "Tsuka Worship" (mound worship) used to appease spirits, making it a significant historical event that demonstrates a unique form of local spiritual belief and cultural heritage.
The greatest highlight is the sight of 108 flickering lights scattered along the ridge of Dozenzan Mountain as darkness falls. The sight of countless lights floating in the darkness creates a truly mystical atmosphere. Furthermore, the "Misato Summer Festival Fireworks Display" takes place immediately after the ritual. This combination of a solemn traditional ceremony and a modern, large-scale fireworks display is a unique characteristic of this region.
This event is held exclusively on the night of August 15. The event typically takes place during the evening (estimated from 18:00 to 21:00), allowing visitors to enjoy the atmosphere of a Japanese summer night. As August is extremely hot, please take precautions against the heat even during the evening. Since the fireworks follow the ritual, you can enjoy a continuous flow of traditional and modern festivities.
The primary experience is witnessing the traditional ritual: observing the local youth lighting the fires and watching the lights spread across the mountain slope. Following the ritual, you can enjoy the grand fireworks display alongside many other spectators. It is a wonderful opportunity to experience the fusion of traditional regional rituals and modern celebratory events.
The venue is the Inomata area of Misato Town. The area surrounding Dozenzan Mountain is rich in nature, and many people gather here during the festival season. The scenic natural landscape of Misato provides a beautiful backdrop for experiencing local culture.

As this is a traditional local ritual, English-speaking staff or English signage may be very limited. It is best to understand the basic flow of the event beforehand.
No advance reservations are required. However, as more than 20,000 visitors are expected, the area will be very crowded. Please arrive early and plan your transportation accordingly.
Since the event is held in mid-August, breathable and light clothing is recommended. Because the ritual takes place near a mountain ridge, there may be unpaved paths; please wear comfortable walking shoes. Additionally, bringing insect repellent and a flashlight for moving in the dark will be very helpful.
