The Kitakyushu Museum of Natural History & Human History is a public museum located in Yahatahigashi-ku, Kitakyushu City, Fukuoka Prefecture. This facility was born from the integration of previously separate natural history, history, and archaeology museums, further enriched by the industrial history that supported Kitakyusa throughout the 20th century. Its greatest feature is the ability to learn about the grand scale of history—from the birth of the solar system to the modern era—through both natural and human perspectives.
The history of this museum is closely tied to the Kitakyushu Expo held in 2001. The building, constructed as part of the Expo site, officially opened on November 3, 2002. Originally, the natural history, history, and archaeology sections were separate entities, but they were unified to create a more comprehensive experience by adding the 'history of industry' as a new perspective. The museum underwent renewals in 2013 and 2023 to celebrate its anniversaries and municipal milestones, ensuring a cutting-edge exhibition environment.
The highlight of the natural history section is the dinosaur exhibition. The life-sized reconstruction of the Tyrannosaurus rex, known as "Sue," is truly breathtaking. In the vast exhibition space called the "Earth Mall," visitors can dynamically experience the history of life. The history section, themed around "Paths," showcases the exchange of culture and the progression of humanity in East Asia. Additionally, the museum features unique exhibits that evoke the origins of the universe and Earth, such as the moon rock displays that were once part of the Space World collection.
The museum is enjoyable year-round, but we recommend visiting in the early morning to enjoy the exhibits at a more relaxed pace. Since special exhibitions often offer new discoveries different from the permanent displays, it is wise to check the official schedule in advance. Please note that the museum closes for a week in late June for pest control and is also closed during the New Year holidays; always check before your visit.
Inside the museum, you can visually learn about the evolution of Earth and humanity from both natural and historical viewpoints. Seeing the scale of the full dinosaur skeletons and the industrial-era artifacts provides a sense of magnitude that photos alone cannot convey. It is an incredibly enriching educational experience for families, students, and travelers interested in natural science and history.
The area around the museum is home to several facilities that support the culture and science of Kitakyushu. You can visit the Kitakyushu Environment Museum or the Kitakyushu Science Museum (Space LABO) to gain a deeper understanding of the region's characteristics.
