Ino no Tanada (Ino Rice Terraces) is a stunning landscape in Akiota Town, Hiroshima Prefecture, that preserves the essence of Japan's original scenery. It holds a prestigious place in the '100 Best Terraced Rice Fields in Japan' (Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, 1999) and was famously selected by CNN as one of 'Japan's 31 Most Beautiful Places.' Located in a basin at an altitude of 500m to 550m, the landscape is characterized by the breathtaking sight of 324 overlapping terraced fields. The history of this land is deeply rooted in the past, with cultivation estimated to have begun between the late Heian and Kamakura periods. The sophisticated stone wall techniques used to support these terraces are believed to be linked to the influence of the Kikukawa clan, who ruled the region during the Sengoku and Azuchi-Momoyama periods. Many of the existing stone walls were constructed approximately 500 years ago, offering a tangible connection to history. Records from the 1638 Hiroshima Clan land survey show that the scale of the fields has remained remarkably consistent over centuries. Today, the community actively works to preserve this heritage through local engagement and cultural events.
The primary attraction is the multi-layered view of the terraced fields spreading across the basin, surrounded by steep mountains. The stone walls, made of granite, feature a powerful and sturdy vertical construction. Visitors can enjoy the view from a well-maintained observation deck, which also features a parking lot and restrooms.
