Inubosaki Lighthouse is a first-class lighthouse located at the easternmost tip of the Kanto region on the Inuboshi Cape in Choshi City, Chiba Prefecture. The lighthouse stands on a coastal terrace surrounded by the sea on three sides. This white tower holds high historical and cultural value and is officially designated as a National Important Cultural Property of Japan. Designed and constructed in 1874 (Meiji 7), the lighthouse was built under the supervision of engineers invited from the United Kingdom. The structure is a Western-style brick building, preserving its significant historical integrity. The surrounding area also features historical structures such as the former fog signal station, which serves as a testament to the maritime history and the development of sea transportation in the region.
The greatest attraction is the observation deck. After climbing the stairs, you are rewarded with an unobstructed view of the endless Pacific horizon. The lighthouse is open year-round, though operating hours vary by season. From March to September, it stays open until 17:00, and from October to February, it closes at 16:00. The area is also famous as one of the best spots in Japan to witness the earliest sunrise of the New Year. Since reaching the observation deck requires climbing stairs, we recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes. The admission fee is 300 JPY for adults and free for elementary school students and younger. Please note that the facility may close unexpectedly due to severe weather or operational reasons, so it is wise to check information in advance. Parking is free, but the site is also accessible via public transportation (train and bus).
