Imizu Shrine is renowned as the grand guardian of the former Etchu Province, nestled within the scenic Takaoka Castle Park in Takaoka City, Toyama Prefecture. Deeply cherished by the local community throughout history, the shrine grounds are constantly refreshed by the changing seasons. A major highlight is the 'Yaebeni' sacred tree, a 400-year-old plum tree, and the 'Hanachozu' (flower water basins) that change their floral arrangements seasonally. Visitors are also drawn to the shrine to collect beautifully designed amulets (omamori) and monthly changing Goshuin (sacred calligraphy stamps), which reflect the unique spirit of the season.
The history of Imizu Shrine is profound; it is recorded in the 'Engishiki' of the Heian period as a highly prestigious shrine. The famous poet Otomo no Yakamochi also referenced this sacred land in the 'Manyoshu' collection, highlighting its long-standing cultural significance. In the Meiji era, the shrine was relocated to its current site within the former Takaoka Castle grounds. The current architecture follows the Shinmei-zukuri style, rebuilt in 1902 after a major fire. The shrine also holds deep connections to Japan's imperial history, featuring a torii gate gifted from the Ise Grand Shrine (Geku) and a historical connection to the Emperor's Great Thanksgiving Festival (Daijosai).
