Imamura Catholic Church is a Catholic sanctuary located in Tachiarai, Mitai District, Fukuoka Prefecture. Completed in 1913 (Taisho 2), this building is characterized by its Romanesque-style red brick exterior with two prominent towers. Designated as a National Important Cultural Property, it is a highly precious example of brick church architecture remaining in Japan. It stands as a symbol of the profound historical value of the people who once protected their faith in this region.
The history of this area dates back to the era of "Hidden Christians" during the Edo period. In 1867, the existence of hidden believers in the Imamura district was discovered by followers from Urakami. Following the restoration of orthodox Catholic faith, the current sanctuary was constructed under the plan of Father Hosoda. The construction was supported by donations from abroad, particularly Germany, and the voluntary labor of local believers. Notably, the bell that once sat in the tower was confiscated during World War II, adding another layer to its history. The sanctuary was shaped by the preservation of faith, international support, and the dedication of the local community.
The most striking feature is its unique architectural style. The Romanesque exterior, featuring twin hexagonal towers, was modeled after the former Urakami Cathedral in Nagasaki, making it a rare form of brick architecture in the Kyushu region. The interior is filled with exquisite details, including French stained glass, 14 sacred paintings depicting the Passion of Christ, and pillars made from cedar from Mount Kora. Please note that due to ongoing seismic reinforcement work, access to the interior is currently restricted.
You can enjoy its historic presence regardless of the season. Visiting during times of soft sunlight will allow you to more clearly perceive the texture of the red bricks and the three-dimensional beauty of the architecture. As of June 2022, seismic reinforcement work is underway, so interior access may be unavailable. When viewing the exterior, we recommend spending a serene moment reflecting on the weight of history amidst the quiet surroundings.
Because of the ongoing preservation and restoration work, participation in regular Mass or interior tours is currently limited. The primary experience is a "Historical Exploration," where you can observe the exterior architecture and learn about the historical background, such as the history of the hidden Christians. You can enjoy a spiritual journey by walking through the quiet streets and tracing the footsteps of the believers who once protected their faith.
The area around Tachiarai is filled with historic landscapes. There are various spots where you can encounter historical architecture and local culture. After visiting the church, we recommend a stroll through the peaceful surrounding scenery.
The sanctuary is a place of worship and a historical cultural property. Respectful behavior is required. Please choose modest clothing and avoid overly revealing or flashy attire. As construction is underway, strictly avoid entering any restricted areas. Additionally, please respect the quiet residential environment by keeping noise to a minimum.
