Imokoura Beach is a beautiful inlet located in Kami Town, Mikata District, Hyogo Prefecture. It belongs to the San'in Kaigan Quasi-National Park and the San'in Kaigan UNESCO Global Geopark. Known as both 'Imokohama' and 'Imokoura Coast,' the area is characterized by the striking contrast between its white sandy beaches and the unique rock formations known as 'Senjojiki.' This area is well-developed as a recreation zone, allowing visitors to enjoy a wide variety of activities such as swimming, camping, sports, and nature-based learning.
The region has a long history deeply connected to the sea. During the Edo period, the area was a bustling port, hosting the 'Imokoura Funaban' (a local maritime outpost) to monitor incoming vessels. A fascinating local legend surrounds the 'Kaeru-jima' (Frog Island), a massive rock shaped like a frog floating offshore; sailors of the Kitamaebune merchant ships would pray at this site, using the word 'kaeru' (to return) as a pun for both the frog and their safe return home. Additionally, the area's cinematic beauty gained international recognition as a filming location for the 2010 film 'Norwegian Wood.'
The greatest charm of Imokoura is its unique topography. The sight of the white sand beach meeting the waveswept rocky reefs is truly spectacular. Offshore, you can see Shiraishi Island and Kuroshima Island, adding to the natural architectural beauty of the landscape. As one of the '100 Best Sunsets in Japan' and one of the '100 Best Sunset Accommodations in Japan,' the evening scenery is exceptionally valuable and continues to captate visitors. Nearby facilities like the Grass Observatory, Yusuge Park, and Yunagi Park allow you to relax while gazing at the horizon.
The peak season for swimming and outdoor recreation is from May to September, with the area becoming particularly lively during the summer months. Since it is a premier sunset spot, we highly recommend visiting in the late afternoon. Watching the sky change colors as the sun sinks into the sea behind the silhouettes of the islands is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. It is also an excellent time to enjoy the local parks and campsites to feel the seasonal changes in nature.
Imokoura offers many ways to connect with nature. In summer, it is an ideal destination for families to enjoy swimming and water-based recreation. The adjacent Imokoura Family Campground allows for an immersive outdoor experience, staying overnight under the stars. The area also supports various sports and nature-based activities, providing a perfect escape from daily life.
There are several spots nearby to explore. 'Obiki-no-hana' is within walking distance and offers even deeper views of the coastline. The nearby areas of 'Tajima Akakabe' and 'Goshikodomon' also showcase stunning natural formations. These spots are part of the San'in Kaigan Geopark and are perfect for those interested in geology and scenic drives.
