Ikuta Ryokuchi is a vast natural park located in Tama-ku, Kawasaki City, Kanagawa Prefecture. It preserves the traditional landscape of ancient woodlands, wetlands, and rice fields, maintaining a rich natural environment even while being situated near urban-developed areas. The park is well-equipped with features such as the 'Green Adventure Course,' which includes informative signs to help you learn about tree species and their characteristics, as well as beautifully manicured gardens that change with the seasons and observation decks for breathtaking views. It serves as a vital space for both nature conservation and providing citizens with opportunities to connect with the natural world.
The park preserves the 'Satoyama' environment—a traditional Japanese landscape where humans and mountains have lived in close harmony. The design utilizes the natural topography of the Tama Hills, serving as a precious sanctuary for the ecosystems of woodlands and small animals that are often lost during rapid urban development. The area also includes elements that reflect local history, such as an open-air museum featuring relocated traditional folk houses, making it a place to understand the deep connection between human culture and the natural environment.
There are numerous spots within Ikuta Ryokuchi to keep every visitor engaged. Notable attractions include the walking paths lined with botanical nameplates, the Wild Bird Forest, and areas like the Plum Garden and Azalea Hill that showcase seasonal blooms. For those interested in aquatic ecosystems, the 'Hotaru no Sato' (Firefly Village) and the 'Oshinuma Plaza' offer beautiful views of wetlands and water-based life. Additionally, an observation deck atop the hill provides a wonderful vantage point to look out over the surrounding scenery.
The landscape transforms beautifully throughout the year. In spring, the park is adorned with cherry blossoms and plum blossoms, while early summer is the perfect time to observe the enchanting Genji fireflies. The autumn foliage season is also highly recommended for its vibrant colors. Daytime is the best time for nature walks and bird watching to fully enjoy the sounds of the forest. While the park is primarily a daytime destination, certain special events, such as moon-viewing festivals, may take place in the evenings.
Visitors can engage in various activities that leverage the natural setting. This includes walking the 'Green Adventure Course' to learn about local flora, or participating in wellness programs like yoga and Pilates (please note that some programs may require advanced reservations). In the Wild Bird Forest, you can observe a variety of birds, ranging from resident species like the sparrow and Japanese bush warbler to various migratory birds that visit depending on the season.

For a comfortable experience, we highly recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes or sneakers. As the park covers diverse natural terrain, please prepare clothing suitable for the season (breathable clothes for summer, and layers for spring/autumn). While entry to the park is generally free, please check local notices for specific events or facilities that may require a fee. To protect the environment, please follow the rules: do not collect plants and always take your trash home with you.
