Ikishima is a small island located approximately 7 km off the coast of the Sotome district in Nagasaki City. It once developed as a large-scale undersea coal mine and played a vital role in supporting the growth of modern Japan. Although the mine closed in 2001 as the last coal mine in Kyushu, it now attracts many visitors as a precious site of industrial heritage. The island is filled with various coal-related facilities, offering a landscape that vividly conveys the energy of its past.
The history of Ikishima began with the development of undersea coal mining in 1952. By 1959, commercial production was underway, and the mine eventually expanded into a massive operation with a total tunnel length of approximately 90 km, reaching as far as Hikishima. However, due to the energy revolution and competition from foreign coal, the mine closed its doors in 2001, marking the end of an era. While the population once reached as high as 7,700, the island is now a quiet place, yet the buildings and equipment that tell the story of its former prosperity remain scattered throughout the landscape.
The greatest attraction is the "Ikishima Coal Mine Experience Tour," led by former miners. Riding an electric trolley to experience the workings of the mine is an extremely rare opportunity in Japan. Visitors can also enjoy a leisurely stroll around the various coal-related facilities left on the island. These industrial ruins provide a tangible connection to the era that drove Japan's industrial development, allowing you to feel the atmosphere of the past.
Ikishima reveals different faces depending on the season. The months of April, May, October, and November are particularly recommended, as the weather is stable and ideal for exploring the island and enjoying the ferry ride. For the best experience, including walking around the island and taking the ferry, choosing a day with clear weather is highly advised.
The main activity on the island is undoubtedly the coal mine experience. Because the electric trolley tour includes explanations from former miners, it offers a much deeper level of learning than standard sightseeing. Additionally, walking freely around the island to trace the remnants of past lives and industries is a unique experience that can only be found here.
Access to Ikishima is via ferry from Konoura or Oseto in Nagasaki City. The surrounding Sotome area features beautiful coastlines and a landscape rich in nature, allowing you to enjoy scenic views alongside historical landscapes.
