Ikei Island (Ikei-jima) is a beautiful island located in Uruma City, Okinawa Prefecture. It is situated on the eastern coast of central Okinawa Island and is easily accessible via a scenic drive through Heianza Island and Miyagi Island using the Kaichu-doro (sea road). The route to the island is defined by the striking red Ikei Grand Bridge, which creates a magnificent contrast against the surrounding turquoise ocean. With a small population of approximately 300 residents, the island preserves a traditional Okinawan atmosphere, characterized by lush sugarcane fields and rows of Fukugi trees that serve as natural windbreaks.
The heart of the island holds significant historical value, notably the Nakabaru Ruins. This archaeological site contains traces of a settlement from the late Jomon period, dating back approximately 2,000 to 2,500 years. Excavations have revealed pit dwellings and artifacts such as pottery, stone axes, bone needles, and shells, providing a window into ancient life. Due to its immense academic importance, the site was designated as a National Historic Site in 1986. The presence of natural springs (In-naga) further underscores the long history of human habitation on this land.
The primary highlight of Ikei Island is Ikei Beach, famous for its exceptionally high water transparency. It is a popular spot for swimming and various marine activities. Another notable feature is the pair of Shisa statues located at both ends of the Ikei Grand Bridge, making the bridge a perfect photo spot. Travelers can identify the Shisa by their mouths: those with open mouths are males, while those with closed mouths are females. Visitors can also enjoy the quintessential Okinawan landscape, featuring vast sugarcane fields and traditional Fukugi tree-lined paths.
The most active season for visiting Ikei Island is from May to September during the summer months, which is the peak time for beach activities. For the best driving experience, visit during the daytime when the sunlight makes the ocean colors appear most vibrant. At night, the island offers a spectacular view of the starry sky, making it an ideal location for stargazing photography and night-sky photo tours.
At Ikei Beach, visitors can enjoy snorkeling and various marine sports in the incredibly clear water. The island is also a haven for photography enthusiasts, offering beautiful natural backdrops for portraits and specialized stargazing photo tours. Some local studios even offer photography experiences that combine the stunning night sky with traditional Okinawan-style settings.
To reach Ikei Island, you will drive through the Kaichu-doro sea road, passing through Heianza Island and Miyagi Island. The drive is highly recommended for its scenic views. From Naha Airport, the journey takes approximately 1 hour and 10 minutes via the expressway. The surrounding area is well-equipped with beaches, resort hotels, and scenic driving routes to enjoy the coastal scenery.
Traveling by rental car or private vehicle is the most common way to explore the island. Please drive carefully, as many roads near residential areas are quite narrow. When visiting the beach, remember to bring swimwear, sandals, sun protection gear, and a hat. While some facilities may accept credit cards or IC cards, many smaller shops and natural areas in the area primarily accept cash. English language support is limited to specific locations like certain photo studios; for most public areas, basic Japanese is expected. Please respect the local residents and be mindful of noise and privacy in residential zones.
