Ikegahara Wetland is a low-moor wetland located in the center of the Nkoi Plateau at an altitude of 960m to 980m in the North Hida area of Hida City, Gifu Prefecture. Designated as a natural monument of Gifu Prefecture, the area is strictly protected to preserve its precious ecosystem. In spring, as the snow melts, the Skunk Cabbage (Mizubasho) begins to bloom en masse, offering a powerful display of nature's vitality. Thanks to the well-maintained boardwalks, visitors can easily stroll through the wetland and experience the scenery up close.
This region is part of an ongoing effort to protect and preserve the natural environment of North Hida. As a vital part of the local ecosystem within a natural park, Ikegahara Wetland serves as a significant natural heritage site. To balance sustainable tourism with environmental protection, the area utilizes a system called the "Forest Environment Promotion Cooperation Fund." This ensures that while visitors enjoy the natural beauty, the environment is preserved for future generations. For many years, it has been a beloved destination for both locals and travelers who come to appreciate the changing seasons.
The greatest attraction is the colony of Skunk Cabbage that symbolizes the arrival of spring. The striking color contrast between the white Skunk Cabbage and the bright yellow Marsh Marigold is a unique spectacle found only during this season. A boardwalk runs through the center of the wetland, allowing you to observe the life force of the plants from a close distance. The landscape changes dramatically with the seasons: enjoy refreshing breezes in the summer, the colorful foliage of autumn (Koyo) and white birch trees, and the serene, quiet atmosphere of the changing seasons.

The best time to visit is from late April to early May when the Skunk Cabbage is in full bloom, capturing the essence of life emerging from the melting snow. Summer offers a refreshing escape with cool breezes, making it ideal for a light hike. In autumn, the changing colors of the plants are beautiful to behold. Please note that access may be restricted or closed during the winter season. Visiting during daylight hours is recommended to fully appreciate the vivid colors of the flowers and the blue sky.
