Ikeda Wine Castle (Ikeda Town Grape & Wine Research Institute) is a unique facility located in Ikeda Town, Nakagawa District, Hokkaido. Its architecture is modeled after a medieval European castle, making it a landmark of the region. Established in 1963 as the first winery founded by a municipality in Japan, it specializes in producing high-quality wines using unique grape varieties. The building itself serves as a major tourist attraction, housing exhibition facilities to learn about the winemaking process, a shopping area, a restaurant, and an observation terrace that offers a panoramic view of the Tokachi Plain.
The facility's journey began in 1963 upon obtaining the license for fruit liquor manufacturing. By 1974, the current iconic "Wine Castle" structure was completed, establishing a deep-rooted tradition of utilizing the region's abundant grapes. For decades, it has served as a cornerstone of the Tokachi region's wine culture, focusing on the development of original varieties and technical excellence. Notably, the site also houses the "DREAMS COME TRUE VINEYARD," blending local agricultural heritage with a touch of cultural entertainment.
The facility offers diverse experiences across different levels. In the B2F aging cellar, visitors can observe the barrel and bottle aging processes, including the production of sparkling wines. The B1F museum features informative panels regarding winemaking techniques and history. On the 1F, the shopping area offers local Tokachi wines and specialties, with windows that allow a glimpse into the brandy distillery. The 2F library houses books related to wine and viticulture, while the 3F castle master's room and lecture hall display various prestigious awards. Finally, the rooftop observation terrace provides an unparalleled view of the vast Tokachi Plain.
While the facility is open year-round, the experience changes with the seasons. From summer to autumn, the atmosphere is particularly vibrant as it coincides with the grape cultivation and harvest seasons. A highly recommended time to visit is during the late afternoon; the view from the rooftop terrace is celebrated as one of the "100 Best Sunsets in Japan." We suggest visiting during the day for exhibitions and shopping, and arriving in the evening to witness the stunning sunset.
Visitors can deepen their knowledge of viticulture through the various exhibits. You can enjoy reading in the library or engage in wine culture through the tasting services (availability may vary). The 1F shopping area is perfect for purchasing local specialties, and the restaurant floor offers delicious meals featuring local ingredients like Tokachi beef.
The area surrounding the castle is characterized by the expansive, beautiful pastoral landscapes of the Tokachi Plain. Nearby facilities like "DCTgarden IKEDA" also contribute to the region's identity as a center for wine and agricultural culture. As the facility involves movement between different floors, we recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes. Please observe quiet and respectful behavior in exhibition areas and restaurants. Payments can be made via cash, various credit cards, and transportation IC cards. While English signage and menus may be available, it is recommended to check local availability on-site. No prior reservation is required for standard entry, but group visits or special events should be confirmed in advance.
