The Iizumi Kannon Daruma Ichiba is a traditional event held over two days on December 17th and 18th at Shofukuji Temple (also known as Iizumi Kannon) in Odawara, Kanagawa Prefecture. The biggest draw is the vast array of Daruma dolls and various lucky charms displayed throughout the temple grounds. The sight of countless Daruma dolls, each with different sizes and expressions, is a unique landscape found only during this season. Additionally, many food stalls set up shop, offering popular Japanese festival foods and warm drinks. You can even choose a Daruma to write your wishes upon after purchase. Walking through the bustling temple grounds allows you to feel the essence of Japanese year-end customs up close.
The event takes place over two days: December 17th and 18th. On the 17th, it runs from 10:00 AM until approximately 9:00 PM, becoming very lively in the evening with families and workers. The 18th is a shorter event, running from 9:00 AM to around 1:00 PM. To avoid the heaviest crowds, consider visiting in the morning on either day. On the evening of the 17th, you can enjoy the atmosphere of the illuminated temple and food stalls, but please be prepared for the cold temperatures.
You can enjoy strolling through the stalls while sampling delicious street foods and warm beverages. Classic menu items like yakisoba, oden, and grilled skewers are popular, especially during the chilly season. As the event is held in mid-December, warm clothing (such as a heavy coat or down jacket) is essential. It gets quite cold, especially on the evening of the 17th. Comfortable walking shoes are recommended for navigating the temple grounds. If it rains, a raincoat may be more practical than an umbrella in crowded areas.
