The Ichinozaka River is a secondary river flowing through Yamaguchi City, Yamaguchi Prefecture. During the Muromachi period, the Ouchi clan developed the city's layout by modeling it after Kyoto's Kamo River, earning Yamaguchi the nickname 'The Kyoto of the West.' The riverbanks are lined with beautiful cherry blossom trees that bloom in spring. Furthermore, the area features a specialized 'Firefly Embankment' designed to protect local ecosystems. This makes it a famous spot for observing the Genji firefly, a species designated as a national natural monument, during the early summer months.
The history of this site dates back to the Muromachi period. The river was a central element in the urban planning of the Ouchi clan, symbolizing the culture of Kyoto. The left bank, specifically the Tatekomichi area, preserves the atmosphere of the old town with its traditional streetscapes. Following a significant flood in 1971, the river underwent extensive development to balance flood control with environmental preservation. The current 'Firefly Embankment' is a testament to this harmony between human engineering and nature, having received awards such as the 'Handmade Hometown Award' for its contribution to local cultural and environmental value.
The greatest charm of the Ichinozaka River lies in its seasonal transformations. In spring, the cherry blossom trees line the banks, sometimes accompanied by beautiful light-up events at night. From late May to early June, the 'Firefly Viewing Week' is held, offering a truly magical experience as Genji fireflies dance over the water. Visitors can enjoy a peaceful stroll while taking in the soothing sound of the flowing water against the backdrop of historical architecture.
Spring (March–April) is the peak season for cherry blossoms, making it the perfect time for a scenic walk. Early summer (late May–early June) is a special period for viewing Genji fireflies; a nighttime visit is highly recommended during this time. Regardless of the season, daytime visits are ideal for a relaxing walk by the river, while evening visits offer a more atmospheric experience with various light-up displays.
The primary activity around the Ichinozaka River is nature walks. You can stroll along the paths to observe seasonal flowers and the local aquatic ecosystem. The firefly viewing in early summer is a rare and precious experience unique to this region. Additionally, the area provides a relaxing atmosphere where you can enjoy the scenery while visiting nearby facilities.
The left bank of the Ichinozaka River features a district that retains its historical charm. There are several local spots nearby where you can stop to experience the local history and culture. Since it is located near the center of Yamaguchi City, access to other major sightseeing spots in the area is very convenient.
We recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes for your stroll. The terrain near the riverbanks may change depending on the season and weather, so please dress appropriately. While photography is free, please respect public manners and the surrounding environment. As this is a natural river area, there are no entrance fees or reservation requirements, but we kindly ask that you follow environmental protection rules, such as taking your trash home with you.
