The Ichinomiya Tanabata Festival is a traditional Tanabata celebration held in Ichinomiya City, Aichi Prefecture. It is recognized as one of the "Three Great Tanabata Festivals of Japan," alongside the famous Sendai and Shonan Hiratsuka festivals. Ichinomiya was once a central hub for the Bishu textile industry, a major global center for wool production. This festival is held to pray for the continued prosperity and development of the local textile and weaving industries.
The first Ichinomiya Tanabata Festival was held in 1956. The festival is deeply rooted in the cultural history of Ichinomiya as a textile-producing city, serving as a way to honor the growth and prosperity of the weaving industry. In addition to the traditional 'Furinashi' (streamer) decorations, the festival features creative Tanabata ornaments made by local elementary and junior high school students, making it a multi-generational community event that preserves local heritage.

The festival is held annually for four days during the last week of July, from Thursday to Sunday. Events take place from daytime through the evening across various parts of the city. As night falls, the lighting of the lanterns creates a magical atmosphere that differs significantly from the daytime scenery.
Visitors can enjoy a wide range of programs, from traditional Japanese arts to modern entertainment. You can witness traditional performing arts like Wadaiko drumming and folk dances, as well as much more contemporary acts such as jazz, hula dancing, magic shows, comedy, and character shows on the special stages. The unique local atmosphere is further enhanced by the rickshaw parades and the community-wide water-sprinkling rituals.
The heart of the festival is the area around the Ichinomiya Honcho Arcade. Events spread throughout the Ichinomiya city area. The venue is easily accessible on foot from JR Owari-Ichinomiya Station (Tokaido Main Line) and Meitetsu Ichinomiya Station (Meitetsu Nagoya Main Line/Meisei Line). The surrounding area is well-equipped with local shops and restaurants.
