Ichinomata Sakura Park is located in Toyota-cho, Shimonoseki City, Yamaguchi Prefecture, surrounding the Yonohara Reservoir (a dam lake). The most striking feature of this location is the 'Mizukagami' (water mirror) effect, where the lake surface acts like a mirror, reflecting the surrounding mountains and the sky. The sight of the 'submerged forest'—dead trees protruding from the water—is a highly distinctive landscape that has gained significant attention on social media. In spring, about 100 Yoshino cherry trees bloom in full glory, making it a famous spot for viewing 'Reverse Sakura' (the reflection of cherry blossoms on the water).
The heart of the park is the Yonohara Reservoir, an artificial lake completed in 1943 (Showa 18). Over the 80 years since its completion, the current landscape has evolved in harmony with the surrounding natural environment. Because of this history, the site is not just a natural park but also serves as a significant historical structure that supports the region's water resources. The current scenery, where nature and the man-made reservoir blend seamlessly, is a view shaped by the passage of many years.
The main attractions of Ichinomata Sakura Park change with the seasons. In spring, the cherry blossom trees line the lakeside, offering a beautiful pink reflection on the water. The 'submerged forest'—the unique sight of trees standing beneath the water's surface—is a one-of-a-kind view found only here. Depending on the season, you can also observe changes in the color of the sky reflected on the lake and the shifting hues of the surrounding mountains.
Since the landscape changes drastically with the seasons, choosing the right time to visit is crucial. Spring (late March to early April) is the peak season for 'Reverse Sakura' when the 100 Yoshino cherry trees are in bloom, attracting the most visitors. In autumn (October to November), the surrounding mountains turn vibrant colors, creating a beautiful contrast on the lake. For the best experience, we highly recommend visiting in the 'early morning.' During these hours, the wind is typically calm, making it much easier to witness the perfect 'water mirror' effect and capture the clearest reflections.
The primary activities at the park are lakeside strolls and landscape photography. For travelers who enjoy photography, the 'Reverse Sakura' and the submerged forest provide incredibly valuable and unique subjects. Additionally, the 'Ichinomata Onsen Village' is located just a 5-minute drive away, allowing you to combine a scenic visit with a relaxing soak in a hot spring.
The area around the park is rich in nature. We recommend stopping by the 'Michi-no-Eki Hotori Kaido Nishinoshichi' nearby. It is a convenient base for checking local gourmet options and regional specialties.
The park and parking area are free of charge. However, if you use nearby facilities or shops, please ensure you have cash or a credit card ready.
English signage and staff support are limited within the park. We recommend using a translation app or preparing in advance.
No prior reservation is required to enter the park. It is open to the public at all times.
Comfortable walking shoes are recommended for strolling along the lakeside. If you visit in the early morning, please bring warm clothing as temperatures can be quite low.
Photography is free and encouraged. If you use a tripod, please be mindful of other pedestrians and ensure you do not obstruct the path.
Parking is available, but please note that some parts of the lakeside paths may be unpaved or have small steps.
To protect the natural environment, please take all your trash home with you and do not pick any plants or flowers.
