Ichijoji is a prestigious Tendai Buddhist temple located in Kasih City, Hyogo Prefecture. Known as the mountain of Hokezan, it serves as the 26th station of the Saigoku Kannon Pilgrimage. The temple grounds are home to numerous precious cultural assets, most notably a three-story pagoda designated as a National Treasure. Hokezan has long been metaphorically described as the 'Mountain of the Eight-Petaled Lotus,' a place where the seasonal shifts are vividly expressed. Visitors can enjoy a changing landscape that features cherry blossoms in spring, lush greenery in summer, and vibrant autumn colors, along with the delicate beauty of citrus blossoms and chrysanthemums.
The history of this temple dates back to the year 650 (the first year of the Hakuchi era). It was established as an imperial temple by order of Empress Kōtoku and founded by the monk Hodō Sennin. The principal deity is the Kannon Bodhisattva. During the medieval period, the temple played a significant role as a center for Buddhist propagation in Harima Province. The site is deeply connected to the history of Prince Shotoku and high-ranking monks of the Tendai sect, with many architectural styles and cultural assets preserving the essence of the Heian period.
The most iconic symbol of Ichijoji is the National Treasure three-story pagoda. This structure is a representative example of 'Wayō' (Japanese style) architecture from the late Heian period and is one of the oldest of its kind in Japan. Another treasure is the collection of ten silk paintings of Prince Shotoku and high-ranking Tendai monks, noted for their exquisite color expression. A unique feature of the temple is the view from the main hall (Hondo); the architecture is designed so that visitors can look down upon the three-story pagoda, creating a seamless integration of structure and landscape. Other important cultural assets, such as the Goho-do and Benten-do halls, are scattered throughout the grounds.
While Ichijoji is beautiful year-round, the spring cherry blossom and autumn foliage seasons are particularly spectacular. The pink blossoms in spring and the colorful leaves in autumn add a profound beauty to the stone steps and ancient buildings. To enjoy the most tranquil atmosphere, we recommend visiting in the early morning when the air is fresh and quiet. If you wish to receive a Goshuin (temple stamp), please ensure you visit between 8:30 and 17:00.
As the 26th station of the Saigoku Kannon Pilgrimage, the temple is a vital stop for pilgrims. The grounds feature well-maintained walking paths and stone steps that allow you to experience the harmony between nature and architecture. Walking the path toward the inner shrine dedicated to Hodō Sennin offers a deep sense of traditional Japanese temple structure. Additionally, you can visit the Treasure Hall (separate fee) to deepen your understanding of the history through its curated exhibits.
The area around Kasai City is rich in historical temples and shrines. For those driving, Ichijoji is easily accessible via the Sanyo Expressway, approximately 5 km (10 minutes) from the Kakokita IC. It is often visited as part of a larger pilgrimage route involving other nearby historical sites.
Due to the many stone steps on the temple grounds, we highly recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes. If you wish to receive a Goshuin, please note the reception hours (8:30–17:00). As this is a sacred place of worship, please maintain a quiet demeanor and respect designated areas for photography and rules regarding filming.
