Hozen-ji Temple, located in the scenic Nagatoro area of Saitama Prefecture, is a sacred site home to two weeping cherry blossom trees designated as municipal natural monuments. The first, known as 'Mida no Sakura,' stands approximately 16.4m tall in front of the main hall. The second, 'Yoraku no Jizo Sakura,' stands about 12m tall near the temple entrance. Both trees are estimated to be over 100 years old, offering a breathtaking display of elegant, drooping blossoms during the spring season.
The tree in front of the main hall is named 'Mida no Sakura' because the temple's primary deity is Amida Nyorai (Amitabha Buddha). The tree at the entrance is called 'Yoraku no Jizo Sakura' due to a legend where its branches once brushed against a Jizo statue inscribed with the phrase 'Baku-ku Yo-raku' (removing suffering and granting joy). These cherry blossoms were officially designated as natural monuments on May 24, 1986, representing a deep connection between the local community, history, and spiritual faith.
The centerpiece of the temple is the two natural monument weeping cherry blossoms. The 'Mida no Sakura' in front of the main hall reaches a height of 16.4m with a wide canopy spreading 14m east-west and 18m north-south. The second tree reaches 12m in height with a spread of 13m in both directions. In spring, the sight of the pale pink blossoms cascading toward the ground is a quintessential Japanese landscape. The historical architecture of the temple and the spiritual significance of the Jizo statue further enrich the experience.
The peak season is April. Under the soft spring sunlight, the delicate colors of the blossoms create a mesmerizing view. Visiting during the bright daylight hours allows you to see the vivid colors of the petals most clearly. It is a highly recommended time to experience the changing seasons alongside the tranquil atmosphere of the temple.
The primary activity at Hozen-ji is the contemplative appreciation of the weeping cherry blossoms. Because the two trees are located in different spots—one at the main hall and one at the entrance—visitors can enjoy the beauty of the blossoms from multiple perspectives.
