Located in Okuma Town, Fukushima Prefecture, 'Hotto Okuma' is a unique accommodation and wellness facility born as a hub for the reconstruction of the region following the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake and the nuclear accident. The name 'Hotto' reflects the wish for visitors to feel a sense of relief and comfort, as if they were in their own homes. It is more than just a bathhouse; it serves as a vital center for revitalizing the local community and providing a space for rest and connection.
Built during the reconstruction process of the Fukushima region, the facility was designed as a place of rest for residents and those involved in the recovery efforts. It aims to be a 'spiritual sanctuary' that helps restore the vitality of the area despite the challenges faced after the disaster. The facility also supports local industries; for example, you may find local specialties like 'Kiboukyo' sake (made from local rice) available, showcasing the rebirth of local culture and industry.
The standout feature is the professional-grade sauna equipment. It boasts a high-temperature 90°C sauna, a refreshing 20°C cold water bath, and the option for 'Löyly' (pouring water over hot stones to create steam), making it a highly rated spot even among dedicated sauna enthusiasts (saunners). In addition to bathing, the facility offers various accommodations, including twin rooms and barrier-free rooms to suit different needs. The large communal bath provides an open and relaxing atmosphere for both overnight guests and day-trip visitors.
The facility is open from 10:00 AM to 10:00 PM, making it ideal for relaxing after a day of sightseeing or for a late-night unwind. The facility also hosts seasonal events; for instance, in February, they may offer special themed baths like the 'Daikon (Radish) Bath.' These seasonal variations offer a unique and changing experience throughout the year.
Visitors can enjoy a refreshing day trip or a longer stay with overnight accommodations. A highlight is the ritual of the sauna experience, including the Löyly steam and the subsequent rest in the lounge. For added relaxation, free massage chairs are available near the front desk to help soothe physical fatigue. Please note that the facility uses heated water rather than natural hot spring water (onsen).
The facility is located within the 'Okuma Town Exchange ZONE.' Since there is no dining service within the Hotto Okuma facility itself, it is common to visit the nearby commercial facility 'Okuma-to' to purchase meals and drinks. The nearby 'linkる Okuma' also serves as a community hub where locals and visitors gather.
Amenities such as shampoo, conditioner, body soap, toothbrushes, and skincare sets are provided, but please check if you need to bring personal items. Payments can be made via cash, credit cards, or transportation IC cards. Please note that room reservations must be made via telephone, FAX, or at the front desk, as online booking is not available. There is a limit on consecutive stays (up to 7 nights for general users), so please confirm details in advance for long-term stays.
