The Hotaruika Museum, located in Namikawa City, Toyama Prefecture, is an interactive museum themed around the ecology of the firefly squid and the mysteries of Toyama Bay. The facility is characterized by its modern, nearly circular architectural design situated by the sea, surrounded by an open space with water features. The interior is divided into zones, including a Market Hall and Restaurant where you can enjoy views of the sea, sky, and the Tateyama Mountain Range, as well as a Museum Zone featuring enchanting light displays.
This facility has been developed over many years as a center to convey the local culture and natural richness of Namikawa City. The foundation was laid in 1989 with the establishment of the Namikawa City Firefly Squid Tourism Facility Construction Fund, followed by the construction of the 'Firefly Squid Observatory' in 1992. The current museum opened in 1998. As a local symbol, it plays a vital role in passing the culture of the firefly squid—a precious marine resource of Toyama Bay—to future generations.
The museum features numerous exhibits to help you learn about the mysterious life of the firefly squid. One of the greatest highlights is the 'Luminous Live Show' held in the live theater, which showcases the brilliant glowing phenomenon. Additionally, in the 'Deep Sea Wonders' area, you can encounter creatures from Toyama Bay that are raised using deep-sea water. The exhibition area is designed to evoke the feeling of the deep sea through much more than just sight, using mystical lighting effects. You can also find original characters inspired by the firefly squid throughout the museum.
From March 20th to late May, which is the peak season for firefly squid, the museum focuses on live firefly squid displays and special related experiences. Please note that admission fees are slightly higher during this peak period. From June to mid-March of the following year, the exhibits focus on the mysteries of the deep sea and other seasonal themes. During the day, you can enjoy a bright atmosphere with views of the ocean and the Tateyama Mountains through the glass-walled Market Hall. Toward the evening, the atmosphere becomes more mystical due to the specialized lighting effects within the museum.
This is an interactive museum designed to engage your senses, not just a place for passive observation. Key activities include watching the bioluminescence shows in the live theater and exploring the space that mimics the deep-sea environment. The ability to enjoy the surrounding scenery is also a unique part of the experience. Visitors gain knowledge about the ecosystem of Toyama Bay and how the firefly squid lives and glows through highly visual and immersive presentations.
The museum is adjacent to the Michi-no-Eki Wave Park Namikawa. The surrounding area features the beautiful coastline of Toyama Bay, perfect for seaside strolls. At the roadside station (Michi-no-Eki), you can also enjoy local specialties and products related to deep-sea water. Since Toyama Prefecture has other marine-themed facilities like the Uozu Aquarium, you can easily include this museum as part of a larger natural-themed sightseeing route through Toyama.
