Hoshigayama Park's 'Satsuki no Sato' area is a nature-rich destination located at an altitude of about 450 meters. Its most iconic feature is the spectacular display of 50,000 Satsuki azalea bushes that bloom from late May to early June. During this period, visitors can witness a breathtaking contrast between the vast expanse of pink blossoms and the deep blue of the Sagme Sea, stretching toward the Manazuru Peninsula. This harmonious blend of natural greenery, sea blue, and floral colors offers a serene and tranquil atmosphere for all who visit.
The area also holds significant historical depth. The surrounding Nango-yama hiking trails feature several spots related to the legendary Minamoto no Yoritomo. For instance, you can find 'Jikansui,' a site where Yoritomo is said to have visited during his retreat, and 'Komichi Jizo,' dedicated to Junkaimin, a person who once saved Yoritomo's life. These remnants of history allow visitors to enjoy a walk that is not just a nature excursion, but a journey through local history.
The absolute highlight of the park is the 'Satsuki Carpet'—the sight of thousands of pink azaleas blooming in unison. Another unique feature is the 'Yuuo no Kane' swing bell. Ringing the bell allows the clear, resonant sound to drift through the air, harmonizing beautifully with the gentle breeze and the surrounding natural landscape. From the observation deck near the summit, you can enjoy an unobstructed, panoramic view of the Sagami Sea, which, on clear days, even reveals distant islands on the horizon.
The best time to visit Hoshigayama Park is from late May to early June to witness the peak of the Satsuki azalea season. However, the scenery changes beautifully with the seasons; from early October to late December, the surrounding Nango-yama area transforms with the vibrant colors of citrus orchards, offering a different kind of natural beauty for autumn visitors.
Main activities include hiking and leisurely nature walks along the Nango-yama trails, where you can explore historical sites. During the peak blooming season, the 'Satsuki no Sato Marche' may be held, offering a chance to experience local culture through the sale of regional vegetables, fruits, homemade jams, and Ashigara tea. It is a perfect way to disconnect from daily life and refresh your spirit.
The park is surrounded by the rich natural landscapes of Yugawara. The Nango-yama hiking routes are accessible via bus from Yugawara Station and are well-maintained for exploring historical landmarks like Jikansui and Komichi Jizo. The proximity to the Manazuru Peninsula and view of Itoshima islands also makes the coastal scenery a major draw.
As the park is located on a mountain, be prepared for potentially strong winds. We recommend bringing a light jacket or windbreaker and wearing comfortable walking shoes. Since there is a walk of about 300m from the parking area to the main area, practical clothing is highly recommended. Please respect the natural environment during your visit.
