Horikiri Shobu-en is a historic iris garden located in Katsushika, Tokyo, with a legacy stretching back to the Edo period. Spanning approximately 8,747 square meters, the garden is home to about 6,000 irises across 200 varieties, including precious Edo-style species. This garden offers a rare opportunity to experience rich, untouched nature while remaining within the urban sprawl of Tokyo, changing its expression beautifully with every season.
The history of this area is deep; some theories suggest iris cultivation began as early as the Muromachi period, while others trace it to the collection of various iris species during the Edo period. During the Edo era, the garden was celebrated as one of the "One Hundred Famous Views of Edo" and was immortalized in the works of legendary Ukiyo-e artists such as Suzuki Harunobu and Utagawa Hiroshige. While several iris gardens existed before the war, the current form is based on the original "Horikiri-en." Since 1973, it has been carefully preserved as a vital cultural heritage of Katsushika.
The primary attraction is the breathtaking display of Japanese irises (Shobu) in early summer. Visitors can observe unique varieties with poetic names like "Katsuragi Hanabi" (Katsuragi Fireworks) and "Janome Kasa" (Oil-paper Umbrella). Beyond the irises, the garden is adorned with seasonal blooms such as plum blossoms, wisteria, wintersweet, and chirimenjasakine, providing a colorful landscape throughout the year. The "Seikan-tei" teahouse offers a perfect place to rest while gazing out at the tranquil scenery.
The peak season for irises is from late May to mid-June. During this time, the garden undergoes a dramatic transformation as the flowers reach full bloom. Please note that during the peak June period (June 1st to 25th), the opening hours change to 8:00 AM – 6:00 PM, allowing visitors to enjoy the garden during the cooler early morning hours. Visiting at different times of the year is highly recommended to witness the distinct beauty of the plum, wisteria, and other seasonal flora.
Visitors can enjoy leisurely strolls while observing the seasonal flora. To ensure accessibility for all-ages and abilities, the garden offers a free wheelchair rental service. During the local "Katsushika Shobu Matsuri" (Iris Festival), the atmosphere becomes particularly vibrant and festive. For a more formal experience, the Seikan-tei facility allows for tea and light meals while enjoying the view (please note that meals/formal gatherings require advanced reservations).
Horikiri Shobu-en is conveniently located about a 10-minute walk from "Horikiri-shobuen Station" on the Keisei Main Line. The surrounding neighborhood is a peaceful residential area. The nearby Arakawa River area also provides excellent spots for enjoying wide-open natural spaces and riverfront views.
Comfortable walking shoes are highly recommended as the paths follow the natural terrain. Depending on the season, it is wise to bring a light jacket for temperature changes.
