Horie Beach is a nature-rich coastal area located in the Horie district of Matsuyama City, Ehima Prefecture. It is highly regarded for its exceptional water quality, having achieved the highest 'AA' rating in the Ministry of the Environment's assessments. This ensures incredibly clear and transparent waters. The beach features a well-maintained sandy shoreline that becomes a vibrant hub for beachgoers during the summer months. The landscape, shaped by the gentle waves of the Seto Inland Sea and surrounded by lush mountains, offers a deeply relaxing atmosphere.
This region has a long history as a vital maritime hub, where sea-based cultures have thrived for centuries. While there are several theories regarding the origin of the place name, one suggests it is linked to Kono Michitaka, who ruled this territory during the late Muromachi period. A significant historical aspect is the 'Hidden Christian Graves' discovered in 1975, which serves as a testament to the people who once practiced their faith in secret. Today, the area is maintained by local volunteers, fostering a strong sense of community and connection to the land.
The greatest draw is the breathtaking color gradient of the sea, shifting from emerald green to deep blue. Thanks to the superior water quality, you can enjoy a truly transparent ocean experience. The sandy beach extends for 820 meters when combined with the adjacent Waki Coast, making for a wonderful seaside stroll. At dusk, the sky transforms into a stunning palette of pink and blue, creating a serene and tranquil landscape against the silhouettes of the surrounding mountains.
The beach is officially open for swimming from early July to late August each year. During this period, you can enjoy the bright blue sea under clear sunny skies. While swimming is best enjoyed during the bright daylight hours, the 'magic hour' at sunset is highly recommended for those wishing to witness the spectacular changing colors of the sky. Depending on the season, you may also encounter local events or exhibitions at nearby facilities.
During the summer, activities center around swimming in the well-maintained waters and relaxing by the shore. The nearby 'Matsuyama Horie Sea Station Umiterras' often hosts local community events and flea markets. Additionally, the nearby 'Horie Shinike Shinsui Park' offers a peaceful environment for walking and connecting with nature. Following local rules, visitors can also enjoy seaside barbecues or fireworks displays.
The surrounding area is dotted with spots where history and nature meet. In spring, you can enjoy the beautiful cherry blossoms along the Goya River. As the region has deep roots in hot spring culture, facilities like 'Gongen Onsen' are nearby, allowing you to enjoy both the sea and the healing waters. The 'Hidden Christian Graves' also remain an important historical landmark in this vicinity.
Please prepare swimwear, towels, hats, and sunscreen to protect yourself from the sun. While foot washes and public toilets are available, it is mandatory to take all trash home with you. If you engage in barbecues or fireworks, please ensure thorough cleanup and be mindful of neighbors. If visiting with children, please ensure they are accompanied by an adult at all times.
