Hori Garden (formerly the Hori Family Garden) is a National Scenic Spot located in Tsuwano, Shimane Prefecture. The most striking feature of this garden is the way it weaves together diverse landscapes and architectural styles from different eras. Within this single estate, you can experience the aesthetic sensibilities of the Edo period (the main house), the Meiji period (the Rakusan-so guest house), and the Taisho period (Warakuen). It is a high-class space where nature and architecture exist in perfect unity.
The garden developed as the residence of the Hori family. The grounds preserve several significant structures, including the Edo-period main house, the Meiji-period guest house 'Rakusan-so', and various storehouses and gates. These buildings are not merely historical relics; they are essential components that define the garden's landscape. From the light-catching tower structures to the intricate designs of the 'ranma' (transom panels), every detail reflects the architectural heritage and the refined lifestyle of the Hori family.
The garden is divided into four distinct areas, each offering a different view and era: the 'Main Garden' of the Edo period, the 'Rakusan-so' garden of the Meiji period, the 'Warakuen' garden of the Taisho period, and the 'Outer Structure Garden' of the former Hatasako Hospital. The architectural elements, such as the Sukiya-style Rakusan-so guest house and the weathered storehouses and gates, add profound depth to the scenery. Observing the subtle differences in architectural design is a unique way to enjoy this site.
The garden's expression changes beautifully with the seasons. The period from late October to mid-November is particularly spectacular, as the autumn colors of the mountainside and the maple trees turn vibrant, enveloping the entire garden in brilliant hues. This is the best time to enjoy the striking contrast between the colorful nature and the historic architecture. Additionally, during the season of fresh greenery, special events such as light-ups may be held.
