Mount Horaiji (Horaiji-san) is a 695m peak located in Shinshiro City, Aichi Prefecture. The mountain is composed of rhyolite and other rocks resulting from volcanic activity approximately 15 to 20 million years ago. Near the summit sits Horaiji Temple, the head temple of the Shingon Sochi Order, which has been protected as a sacred site since ancient times. The area is a designated National Scenic Spot and Natural Monument, offering incredibly rich biodiversity. It is also recognized as one of the 'New Japan's 100 Famous Mountains' by Motaro Iwasaki, making it a popular destination for nature lovers and serious hikers.
The history of Mount Horaiji is profound, dating back to approximately 703 AD when it was founded by the ascetic Rishū. Legend tells that when Emperor Monmu fell ill, Rishū ascended to the capital on the back of a phoenix to perform seven days of prayer, successfully curing the Emperor. In gratitude, the temple complex was built, and the name 'Horaiji' (meaning 'Phoenix Descending Temple') was given in honor of this event. This sacred atmosphere permeates the mountain, and its cultural value is immense, with its beauty even being depicted in Edo-period Ukiyo-e woodblock prints.
The greatest highlight of Mount Horaiji is the 'Omotesando' (Main Approach) leading toward the mid-mountain. This path features 1,425 stone steps, where visitors can enjoy historical architecture and natural beauty.
Mount Horaiji offers stunning scenery throughout the four seasons. Enjoy blooming flowers in spring, lush greenery in summer, vibrant autumn foliage, and crisp, clear views in winter. While the hiking trails are open year-round, it is important to prepare according to the season as the landscape changes significantly.
Primary activities include hiking and mountain climbing. The area features various routes, including the Tokai Nature Trail, the Omotesando from Monya, the Ono course, and a traverse through the Tanayama Plateau. You can also enjoy a literary stroll near monuments dedicated to poets like Matsuo Basho and Santoka Takahashi. Nature enthusiasts can observe wildlife such as the Eastern Screech Owl and various insects like the Great Purple Emperor butterfly.
The base of the mountain offers several points of interest. Yuya Onsen is an excellent place to soak and recover after a hike. The nearby Horai-san Toshogu Shrine is dedicated to Tokugawa Ieyasu. The area also features BBQ facilities and local food stalls selling 'Gohei-mochi' (grilled rice cakes) for a complete travel experience.
