Hounenike Dam (Hounenike Embankment) is located in Ohara-cho, Kanonji City, Kagawa Prefecture. It is the oldest existing stone-masonry multiple-arch dam in Japan. Its unique architectural design gives it a majestic appearance, reminiscent of a medieval European castle, harmoniously blending with the surrounding natural landscape. As a designated national Important Cultural Property, it serves as a precious relic showcasing the history of Japan's modern civil engineering. The surrounding area is developed as the 'Hounenike Yusuiko Park,' making it an ideal spot for visitors to enjoy a peaceful stroll while immersing themselves in history and nature.
This dam represents a significant technical achievement from the Taisho to early Showa eras. Construction began in 1926 and was completed in 1930. The history of its construction is deeply rooted in the local community, with an estimated 150,000 people contributing to the project. The name 'Hounenike' was bestowed by Chuzo Mido, the Minister of Finance, during his inspection of the site in 1929. The structure features a multiple-arch design with five central arches and six buttresses, reflecting American engineering philosophies that were cutting-edge at the time. In 2006, its historical value was officially recognized when it was designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan.
